Blogging pioneer, tastemaker, lifestyle guru, author, new mom—Emily Schuman is a lot of things, but idle is not one of them. Her lifestyle blog, Cupcakes and Cashmere, offers millions of readers a peek into her chic yet relatable life, and since its inception in 2008, her influence has only grown (see: her 261K followers on Instagram and New York Times best-selling book).
Though Schuman says fashion and food were her main inspirations when starting her blog, the new mom isn’t a novice when it comes to beauty either; a quick perusal of the “Beauty” of her site yields makeup looks, hair tutorials, and beauty inspiration a plenty. Thus, when we got the opportunity pick her brain on all things beauty in honor of her limited edition box with Birchbox, we took it. Congrats on being a new mommy! How has your beauty routine changed since you gave birth to your little one?
Schuman: After becoming a mom, the time I spend on my beauty routine has dramatically decreased. If there is a multi-tasking product, I am on it! A two-in-one cheek and lip tint is a lifesaver. I use the same pencil for my brows and my eyes, and seek out the items that I know will save me time. I dyed my hair darker to be less high-maintenance. But, on the flipside, the couple of minutes that I get to put on some makeup seems much more indulgent now. It’s nice to be reminded that I can find a little “me time” in something that I used to take for granted!
Can you walk us through your everyday beauty routine?
Schuman: My daytime routine is pretty quick. I’d say it takes me about ten-minutes to get ready if I also do my hair, and I have a couple of products that I’m absolutely loyal to. For my skin, I really like using a fluid foundation like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk ($62) and always follow up with a drop of the brand’s Maestro Liquid Summer SPF 15 ($64) and do a quick contour—I put bronzer along my hairline, down to my temples, in the hollows of my cheeks and finish off on my eyelids. It helps me look healthy and put together. My daily makeup is minimal, and I mostly concentrate my efforts on filling in my brows and throwing on a quick coat of mascara.
What’s your go-to brow product?
What about hair—what’s your daytime hair routine like?
Schuman: I recently got a blunt A-line bob and it’s been really easy to style. I run my curler through the outermost part of my hair, with the curls going tighter around my face. There aren’t too many products I’m using for my hair right now, beyond my Pssst Dry Shampoo ($6)—I wash my hair like, once a week—and a texturizing spray from Oribe that my husband and I both like.
How do you transition your look from daytime to nighttime—say, a date night?
Schuman: One of my favorite looks is to have a bare face with bright lip during the day. I feel like a bright lip is appropriate for work and meetings, but only if there is nothing on the eyes. Plus, it’s an easy way to feel polished in no time at all. At night, I’ll just add a Brigitte Bardot-esque winged cat eye. Makeup on the eyes can make a look more dramatic.
What’s your go-to look for a night out?
Schuman: I like dewy skin for date nights. It looks fresh and sexy, so I use a liquid foundation with my favorite St. Tropez Illuminator ($23) mixed in. I also like pretty pops of pink on my lips and cheeks. I try to steer clear of anything too severe. I think the easiest trick is to amp everything up. I put dry shampoo into my roots for a little extra volume, thicker eyeliner, and maybe a bright lip.
How did you pick the products in your limited edition box with Birchbox?
Schuman: I’m a product junkie –I think my friends and family can attest to that. I have beauty products spilling out of every drawer, purse, and cupboard. But, I’m also someone who is a loyalist. If I find a product that works—no matter the brand—I stand by it. Birchbox has a huge inventory of both under the radar products and beauty industry heavyweights, but I went with my gut and selected the brands I know and love. These are the products that have a permanent spot on my bathroom counter. At the end of the day, we’re all looking to feel like the products we buy work well.
What’s your favorite product in the bunch?
Schuman: Probably the Shiseido Ultimune ($95)—it’s a powerful concentrate that you put on right after you wash your face. I swear by their cleanser, so it’s a natural fit into my daily beauty routine.
