When it comes to my skin, I used to be extremely lucky. "Used to be" being the operative part of that sentence. I spent my early 20s with a clear complexion, only battling with the occasional dry spell (which The Ordinary's Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, $7, sorted right out, FYI) and the odd spot. Once I turned 27, it was a totally different story. I've struggled with hormonal acne in the past, and while it's still not entirely gone, there is one product that has taught me how to simplify my routine. It also taught me how taking a little time out of my day to care for my complexion is so important.

What Is Elixseri Skin Meditation Serum?
The whole point of Elixseri's Skin Meditation Serum is to combat signs of stress, pollution, and hormonal changes within the skin. With soothing and balancing ingredients like Swiss alpine crystalized light water, echinacea meristem, prebiotic mangosteen ferment, and argan oil, the product hydrates skin and protects it from the aforementioned elements.
Faiza Cochrane-Janselme, cofounder of Elixseri, says that the combination of ingredients is what makes the product so unique. "Echinacea meristem concentrate is rich in phytochemicals, including flavonoids, polysaccharides, and echinacoside and has the ability to stimulate the immune system whilst acting as an effective antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and natural antibiotic," she says, adding the product works on a range of skin types but is best for those with "sensitive or stressed skin," She recommends using it "day and night, under your normal day or night cream."
As a busy, dare I say it, stressed, person, my skin definitely reflects my lifestyle. Whenever I'm stressed, my skin likes to remind me of this and have a little freak-out. We're not just talking spots, as it gets dry and blotchy too. Sounds ideal, right? So naturally, I and my stressed-out skin practically jumped at the chance to try out the serum.
Benefits of Elixseri Skin Meditation Serum
• Acts as an anti-inflammatory
• Reduces redness and pigmentation
Each ingredient helps skin in a different way, says Cochrane-Janselme. And better yet, it's backed up by science. "In vitro tests give echinacea meristem impressive results: inhibiting collagenase (enzymes that break the peptide bonds in collagen) by up to 94 percent while also stimulating new collagen production by more than 24 percent," she says.
In addition to plumping skin and stimulating collagen, the serum also works to hydrate. "The compounds also contain specific molecules that can reduce inflammation, which leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin," says Cochrane-Janselme. "In Skin Meditation, magnolia bark extract works to reduce skin redness, to restore firmness and moisture, and to prevent the loss of elasticity."
Another key ingredient in the serum—Arabian cotton—works to protect the skin from the elements. "Reinforcing our skin’s own built-in SPF with remarkable protective abilities against sun exposure, it also acts to help the skin self-regenerate by boosting collagen and elastin production," says Cochrane-Janselme. "And as an excellent anti-inflammatory, it demonstrates the ability to suppress the inflammation resulting from external and environmental stress and assault. Skin stressors are neutralized, redness reduced, and skin feels calmed, soothed, and cottony soft."
What to Expect From Elixseri Skin Meditation Serum
Packed full of natural actives specifically chosen to counteract the signs of stress, its silky-smooth texture glides on the skin like a lightweight serum. It feels both cooling and soothing, which immediately calmed me. It's not tacky, which meant that rather than rushing the application process, I actually took my time and enjoyed it—something I rarely do.
By the next morning, my skin felt and looked less inflamed. This combined with enriching argan oil meant my skin felt restored and hydrated. Plus, it's got a hint of citric acid, which makes it smell amazing.
The one thing that really stood out for me about this product was that it encouraged me to take moments out of my day to focus on my skin. It's such a luxurious product to apply, which forced me to pat it on slowly and carefully. It really does instantly get to work to soothe irritation, and I found myself looking forward to applying it both morning and night. According to Cochrane-Janselme, the serum can be used in conjunction with pretty much any other ingredient. "In fact, we suggest that if people are using more intensive products, such as retinol, then it is a great product to alternate with," she advises.
What Medical Practitioners Think
While serums comprise a significant portion of U.S. and global skincare sales, they can be a little difficult to decode. So why, exactly, are we supposed to use them—and when? According to Zain Husain, a dermatologist based in Marlboro, New Jersey, serums can actually make a significant difference to the skin—particularly when they're packed full of active ingredients, such as Elixseri's Skin Meditation Serum.
"A serum is a potent topical skincare product you can apply after cleansing your skin, but before applying moisturizer," says Husain. "They contain higher concentrations of smaller molecule active ingredients that can have profound impacts on the skin such as texture, tone, and wrinkles."
The Final Takeaway
Even though my hormonal acne still rears its ugly head now and then, my complexion looks and feels more balanced and less stressed—and I've learned the importance of taking just a little time out to care for it does wonders for my skin and mind. I'll definitely keep this serum in my beauty arsenal.
