No matter how many years I’ve spent doing makeup professionally (18 years, to be exact), creating winged eyeliner looks and using liquid and felt tip eyeliners are still something I need consistent practice at mastering. If you’ve found yourself frustrated repeatedly trying to create a winged liner look, you’re certainly not alone. I’ve tried several felt tip liners over the years, so anytime I have the chance to test one out that I’ve not tried yet, I’m thrilled. Whether you want to perfect your winged liner or just create an intense liner along the lashline, liquid eyeliners help you quickly get the results you’re looking for. Ahead, I tested out the e.l.f Cosmetics Intense Ink Eyeliner (probably one of the most affordable liquid liners out there). Keep reading for my thoughts.

About My Eyes: I'm a liner lover
I wore the same eyeliner look for nearly six years—I am not kidding. Once I discovered the best-winged eyeliner shape for myself, it was game over. I wear makeup on a daily basis, and I am never without mascara, and most often, not without eyeliner either. I usually opt for more natural makeup looks, so if I want to elevate them a bit, I will do that with bold colored lipstick and liquid eyeliner. Some brands of liquid and felt tip liners I’ve worn throughout the years are Stila, Armani Beauty, and Urban Decay.
“For the price of $5 and the size of the tip on the e.l.f Cosmetics Intense Ink Eyeliner, you really can’t go wrong with adding it to your makeup collection. Use it in conjunction with other eyeliners, or use it to start practicing before investing your money in a more expensive eyeliner when you’re ready.”
How To Apply: Take your time and focus
Applying felt tip liners take definite time, focus, and most importantly, practice. If you don’t get it the first time, it’s perfectly okay. I tried a few different liner looks with this product, from full-on wings to a thin, precise line along the lashes. The main difference between felt tip liners and liquid is that the felt tip is designed more like a marker, whereas the liquid liner uses an eyeliner brush dipped in liquid.
Celebrity makeup artist Carolina Dali has some expert tips on using felt tip liners in case you need extra help. Dali emphasizes that it’s really all about practicing as much as you can, “Practice makes perfect. When you have nowhere to go, practice applying your eyeliner, learning the shape of your eye and the wing that’s most suitable for your eye shape. I swear eyeliner can sense and feel your fear, so be confident when applying it. The only way to gain confidence is to practice and become comfortable with the application process.”
If you’re trying to master the application but are falling short, Dali shared a few pro tips that are quite genius, honestly. “Have some skinny cotton swabs on hand (my favorite are by Muji) and some gentle eye makeup remover to remove any mistakes and perfect the shape. You can also buy medical adhesive tape. It molds to the shape of the eye and comes off without leaving any residue. Cut a piece of the tape using a small scissor, and apply on an upward angle at the furthest corner where your lash line ends. Take the felt tip liner and create your desired wing. The tape will help contain the liner and give you a sharp and clean shape. Once you’re done lining, remove the tape, and you’ll reveal a perfect line that’s clean and symmetrical. Repeat the same process to the other eye.”
I usually start with my eyes open and lightly draw the wing shape first on each corner to see if they are even and check to make sure that the wing will be noticeable enough. I then go back and apply the rest of the liner, steadily connecting the line across my lash line, so it appears seamless.
The Results: There's a learning curve
There is a definite learning curve when using this eyeliner. One of the first things I noticed was that the pigment wasn’t very strong, so I really had to bend and work the tip to ensure that enough eyeliner was coming out. The tip doesn’t glide as easily across the lids, so it took me longer to create my winged liner look, as I needed to go over it a few times to ensure the line looked as even as possible. This eyeliner dries very quickly, and when I tried going over it a few times to make it look darker and thicker, some of it flaked off. Creating a very thin line along the lashes was easier to do in one application, but I still needed some help to ensure I dispensed enough of the product.
The Value: It's incredibly affordable
For the price of $5 and the size of the tip on the e.l.f Cosmetics Intense Ink Eyeliner, you really can’t go wrong with adding it to your makeup collection.
