Leave it to Doja Cat to keep it quirky at MTV's 2020 Video Music Awards. The artist known for her e-girl beauty served up a fews different looks for the night: a ‘90s grunge bob, lime green alien-like locks, and one very LONG braid. Jared Henderson, her hairstylist for the momentous occasion tells Byrdie all about how he worked his magic on Doja, who presented and performed her hits "Say So" and "Like That" during the night.
“We wanted to create a Goth inspired look—themed after some of the actual grungy teens who would be reporting MTV news in the 90’s. Nothing sells 90’s goth like a short black bob with a bang and a lot of hair product,” says the hairstylist about Doja’s introductory look for the night.
Jared took a page right out of ‘90s styling and scrunched Doja’s hair after applying tons of mouse and then finishing hairspray as it’s drying to create that beachy wavy effect that stays put. A key component to creating this look was Joico’s Brilliant Glow Brightening Oil ($23). All that’s needed is a dime size amount of in the palms of your hands. Run through the hair to add a little shine and to add the “wet effect” to your hair.
“I applied a lot more of the oil at the middle and ends of her hair to add weight and create a ‘slippery effect’ to keep the hair from catching on the sequins pieces on her outfit while she danced,” says Henderson.
But it was probably her slime-colored performance wig that stole the show. “For the performance we created a whole new planet that Doja lives on. So, in essence she was a beautiful alien. We wanted to go pastel/lime green to compliment the colors in her outfit and the lights used on the set,” Henderson explained.
Joico Color Intensity Limelight Semi Permanent Hair Color ($11) was used to get the out-of-this-world hue. “After Doja’s wardrobe stylist Brett Nelson sent over sketches and searches of the performance outfit, we all settled on green. Doja loves colorful wigs, and we thought lime green would be the perfect color for a beautiful alien,” he tells Byrdie exclusively.
We’re already obsessed with each of these styles and are running to our local Walmart to purchase lime green dye stat. Doja may have did her thing on stage, but it was Jared who did his thing behind-the-scenes. We love a slime green queen.
