I got my hands on the Bond Curl Rehab Salve from Curlsmith and was eager to try it, thanks to its protein-rich benefits. Ahead, I put the treatment to the test as part of my weekend haircare routine to see if it's worth trying. Read on for my honest thoughts.

About the Brand: Curlsmith is New York-based haircare company and was founded in 2017.

About My Hair: Curly and color-treated

My hair is on the mend from various rounds of color treatments, and I am always on the hunt for nourishing products to keep my coils strong and defined. I regularly incorporate deep conditioners and treatments into my routine and was eager to try this salve, which promises bond repair in a few minutes.

The Feel: Creamy consistency

Like the product name suggests, the product does have a thick texture consistent with a salve that could be used for your body but a tad creamier. Curlsmith instructs users to apply the product to wet, non-shampooed hair. The instructions say to apply from root to tip and detangle for even application. Once the product is applied throughout the hair, you can leave it on for up to one hour, depending on your hair's porosity. I applied this to wet hair and loved how it melted into my curls and gave it a nice slip. It had a lovely smell that wasn't too overpowering or strong.

The Results: Super soft and defined curls

It's worth noting that after leaving the salve on for a few minutes, I followed up with the entire Curlsmith repair system, which includes the Miracle Shield Spray ($28) and Bonding Oil ($29), to complete my hair routine. The salve set a great foundation, leaving my hair strong and defined during shampoo and conditioning. Together, all three products worked incredibly well together, but you aren't limited to using the system and can pick and choose single products based on your needs. The salve is a great weekly or bi-weekly treatment option, especially if you color or heat style your hair.

The Value: Worth it compared to similar products

Many pre-shampoo treatments on the market offer different benefits, but this one is worth it if bond repair is your goal. For $29, you get eight ounces of product, and the brand also offers a mini version you can pack if you're traveling (especially good if you'll be swimming or getting your hair wet).

Similar Products: You've got options

Olaplex No.3 ($60): This cult-favorite product has garnered popularity because of its amazing results. Through consistent use, you'll find your hair stronger, whether color-treated, heat-styled, or natural.

Coco & Eve Bond Building Pre-Shampoo Treatment ($25): A few pumps of this pre-shampoo treatment promises similar benefits to the Curlsmith Salve for a few bucks short. It's also gluten-free and vegan if ingredients or allergens are on your list of concerns.

Amika The Kure Intense Bond Repair Mask ($40): Unlike the previously mentioned treatments, this one gets applied after you shampoo and says to leave hair hydrated and more manageable.

Final Verdict

Curlsmith's Bond Repair Salve is a great treatment option to have in your collection, especially if you heat style or color treat your hair.
