As long as I can remember, I’ve been a creature of habit—one with a strong desire to watch Mary Poppins night after night as a kid (I’ve since graduated to reruns of Friends as an adult). The words "habit" and "comfort" have always gone hand in hand for me. There's something comforting about maintaining a consistent practice or keeping a tradition, especially those that spark joy and fond memories: The same coffee spot that makes the perfect frothy iced cappuccino every time, the same vacation spot that always fills you with warmth, and, in the spirit of beauty, the same products that never ever fail you. Beauty trends ebb and flow and product launches runneth over, but as someone who appreciates consistency, I've found solace in a few staple products that I've used since around the same time Britney Spears’ 'Toxic' premiered on TRL. Keep scrolling to find out what they are.
Curious by Britney Spears
Speaking of Britney, I’ve been wearing Curious ($16) on and off for 15 years. The scent has notes of white flower, tuberose and sandalwood, which are notes I still look for today in other fragrances. Tried and true, this is the one scent I've found with the staying power to linger on my skin for an entire day. I regularly get complimented on it along with the follow-up question asking what I'm wearing. It’s fun to see the reactions when I reveal what scent it actually is, which then always turns into a conversation of beauty nostalgia.
Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara
This Neutrogena mascara ($8) has seen me through thick and thin; it's the one product of them all that's had my back almost every day for decades. It's been with me through Sweet 16s, proms, graduations, nights out, first dates, job interviews, and every single event in between to assist me in looking more awake than I actually am. It always gets the job done by giving my stick-straight lashes a little extra kick while striking a good balance of still appearing natural.
Too afraid to ever dye my hair, I’ve been using Sun In since the middle of high school to lighten my locks. Gisele's signature golden waves featured in virtually every magazine of the aughts was always my inspiration. While I don't still use the nostalgic product, I’ve recently started using John Frieda's version ($13) and get even better results—I've even gotten a few friends into it. Recently, when I came back from a beach trip where I'd doused my hair in the lightener, my team thought I'd gotten highlights. Gisele waves, achieved.
Jergens Natural Glow
Jergens Natural Glow ($8) has been in my drawer since junior prom, always at the ready to maintain my Jersey-girl tan. I used it then to even out my shin guard tan lines from soccer and still use it to this day to keep my sun-kissed skin glowing for days after the beach.
A royal blue container of Noxzema pads was always stashed in my soccer bag to remove dirt and oil after practice. Little did I know, 15 years later I’d still be using them as adult acne has reared its ugly head. The scent immediately transports me back to those formative years and thankfully still works like a charm.
Each of these bring me back to a feeling, place, or moment in time when the memory was created, which I get to relive every time I uncap each bottle or tube. These time-capsule relics are sitting pretty in my medicine cabinet, right next to my Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask ($48) and Glossier Cloud Paint ($18). Make new friends, but keep the old.
