With so many unique hair tools to choose from these days, which ones really live up to the hype? Ahead, I tested Chi Haircare’s Lava Spin N Curl device to see for myself what all the fancy features were about. Keep reading for my full review!
Uses: For curling hair, creating bouncy curls, enhancing natural curls, styling hair
Best Features: It has a timed beep alert when your curl is ready to be released from the iron, an easy spinning button activation, a digital temperature display that you can adjust to your preferences, three different time settings (15, 17, or 19 seconds), and a heat-protective curling chamber.
About the Brand: CHI haircare is based in Houston, Texas, and produced by Farouk Systems Inc. The company was founded in 1986 by hairdresser Farouk Shami, whose mission was to provide the professional beauty industry with the most advanced technology that’s based in “Education, Environment, and Innovation.”
About My Hair: I love a good styling tool
I am completely predictable when it comes to my hair and only utilize a few different styles. Either you’ll see me with waves, flat-ironed hair, a blowout, or a ponytail. With that being said, the tools I utilize the most are blow-drying brushes with built-in dryers, flat irons, and curling irons. My hair is medium in length and fine in texture, though I have quite a bit of hair, so people always mistake me for having thick hair. It does take me a while to style my hair when I am committed to it, and I love tools that will do most of the work for me. I have a natural wave pattern only in the back of my head, so I utilize heat styling to help smooth that out on a regular basis. I usually wash my hair every two days and use heat styling on it at least four times a week.
“The results this tool gave me were very bouncy curls with quite a bit of volume. I wasn’t able to create a more beachy wave look with this tool but noticed that throughout the day, my curls relaxed a bit and my hair didn’t look so “done.”
How To Use: Get familiar with the features
This curling tool was a bit tricky for me to get acclimated to at first and I had to really practice. The important thing to note is this isn’t designed like a regular curling iron; the barrel is inside rather than outside the tool.
You need to hold the tool vertically with the backside facing the head, take at least a one-inch section of hair, and lay that section in the opening of the curl chamber. The Spin N Curl has two buttons with arrows that signal right and left, so you’ll press whichever button you want (one curls away from the head, the other curls towards the head). Hold that button to spin the barrel around the hair automatically, and once it’s curled into the chamber, it will stop rotating.
You can choose three settings: 15 seconds, 17 seconds, or 19 seconds. Once the curl is completely set, you will hear four beeps. You’ll then want to slide the tool downward to release the hair and move on to the next section. Repeat these steps until you’re satisfied.
The Results: Bouncy curls for days
I tend to wear beach waves that are slightly loose and less uniform, so the curls I achieved with the Chi Lava Spin N Curl were definitely different than what I’m used to wearing. The device took me some time to get used to, and I definitely had to practice using it several times to get it right. When I first started, my hair would get tangled inside the barrel, and I’d have to pull the curl out and start again. The barrel is 1 ¼ inch, so if you’re looking for something smaller or larger, take note of the size before purchasing.
The results that this tool gave me were very bouncy curls that had quite a bit of volume. I couldn’t create a more beachy wave look with this tool, but I noticed that my curls relaxed a bit throughout the day and my hair didn’t look so “done.” I used this tool on both freshly washed hair and second-day hair, and the shape held up quite well both times. The tool feels quite light, which also makes it easier to use.
Celebrity hairstylist Gregory Patterson gave some expert tips on the Chi Lava Spin N Curl, stating, “This tool is great for restyling 2nd-day hair, adding curls to a ponytail, and is an excellent styling device to use on curly hair types.”
Patterson emphasized the importance of a polished-looking curl and mentioned, “Just a few random polished and controlled curls is my secret to creating a more uniformed curl pattern that you can see all throughout the hair. You can absolutely achieve this look with the Chi Lava Spin N Curl.”
Since the barrel is on the inside, Patterson also noted, “This is a great tool for anyone learning to curl their hair because there’s zero scorch factor.”
Performance: A bit tricky
Using this tool was a bit tricky to start, but overall it gave bouncy curls when I got the hang of it. If you want a tool that helps you with pretty much anything with curling your hair and has rotating features and custom temperature settings, you might want to consider this over a standard curling iron.
The Value: It's costly but fair
While Chi Volcanic Lava Ceramic Pro Spin N Curl has several unique features, it is quite expensive. However, compared to other styling tools, you will see that most of them range anywhere from $100-$140, making the price quite similar to that of the competitors. With the rotating features and all the other unique perks, we find this tool reasonably priced.
