If you know anything about beauty, chances are you know about Charlotte Tilbury. The Brit-born makeup artist has become synonymous with glamour, exquisitely executed makeup looks, and red carpet darlings. To date, she's launched cult-favorite face, lip, cheek, and eye products as well as skincare formulas to perfect your canvas (i.e. your face and bod).
As Tilbury counts supermodels like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell and celebrity heavy hitters including Kim Kardashian West among her friends (and repeat clients), it's only natural that we look to her for the most important beauty rules. Let's call them commandments, shall we?
So without further ado, behold: 10 paramount guidelines to keep your face, skin, and body at celebrity status from the makeup goddess herself, Charlotte Tilbury.
"The most common makeup mistakes are made when choosing a foundation," says Tilbury. "The most important thing is to test out the color in natural light to get your perfect match. If the light is too dark, it's likely that your foundation will be too dark. Also, people forget to match the skin on their neck and ears. Use your fingers to draw a line of foundation onto your cheek, neck, and ears, and if it is the right color, it should blend seamlessly into the skin."
"If you have five minutes to get ready, stick with a red lip and a subtle contour. A classic red lip is the ultimate bombshell look and never goes out of fashion. The shape needs to be perfect; use a lip liner to perfect and enhance the pout, and fill in with a cashmere-soft, moisturizing lipstick like my K.I.S.S.I.N.G lipstick in So Marilyn—it's a true, Hollywood red which has light-diffusing pigments for pert, full-bodied, and luscious lips," says Tilbury.
She continues, "To create killer cheekbones that enhance your natural facial framework, simply suck in your cheeks and then follow the hollow with a natural bronzer. Paint along the nose, jawline, and temples to sculpt the face. Use a highlighter on top of the cheekbones, down the center of the nose, and on the Cupid's bow for gorgeous, candlelit skin. And don't forget to blend, blend, blend!"
"My biggest beauty secret: amazing skin! Your base is the most important—you can't have a perfect painting without a perfect canvas," says Tilbury. "I never go anywhere without my Magic Cream. It's the magic dew of youth and luminosity. It floods the skin with moisture and turns around even the driest, dehydrated, and dull skin. I call it a push-up bra in a jar. Another great backstage trick I've been using for years is applying it on top of the cheekbones and lids to give an extra glow and freshness to the look."
"The key to a phenomenal statement lip is lip liner," says Tilbury. "It's life-changing. You can trace the natural outline of your lips to create the perfect stencil for your matte lipstick. I always say you can cheat and resize your lips! It's an instant youth-booster."
"I am known for creating amazing brows, but the secret to legendary brows is in small strokes. I always say my brushes are like my hands, but the perfect brow brush makes it easy for every woman and man to have brows like Cara Delevingne. The micro-precision brush is a first-of-its-kind multi-bristle brush to catch, coat, and tint even the smallest of baby hairs! With this brush, you can't go wrong, as it acts as a natural compass to amazing natural, luscious-looking brows."
"Sun is beauty suicide—I always look for products with added SPF to protect the skin from the aging effects of the sun," says Tilbury. "The Magic Foundation contains SPF 15 as well as Fomes Officinalis extract, which tightens pores and firms skin. It instantly covers and treats acne; acne scarring; redness and rosacea; tired, dull skin; and age spots."
"Everyone wants to look amazing in photos, but there is an art to it. Nobody has mastered this better than Kim Kardashian West," says Tilbury. "To take your best photo, find your better side (everyone has one!) and apply any final retouches to that side. Confidence is everything; you always look best when you feel your most confident."
"I often say an artist is only as good as their tools; however, for some products, your fingertips can be the best applicators!" says Tilbury. "For a seamless, breathable daytime look, I will always apply foundation using my fingers starting from the nose and blending outward. If you are looking for a more polished, flawless finish, then pat the product over imperfections, rather than smudging it, using a foundation brush.
"But always make sure you clean your brushes. Brushes get dirty so quickly and harbor blemish-causing germs. I use isopropyl alcohol but MAC has a great brush cleaner that really works to clean and maintain your brushes."
"Always start by applying a lip scrub to the lips to get rid of any dry skin, and then apply Vaseline to keep them moisturized. Then, use a sharp lip liner to line the lips and fill them in so that you have a base for the lipstick," says Tilbury. "Apply the lipstick with a square-edged lip brush, and apply a touch of powder over the top to mattify and keep the color in place."
"Makeup is meant to be fun, and it should make you feel confident and sexy," says Tilbury. "I want to empower women to feel their best, as that's when they look their best: when they're just enhancing their natural assets. Find easy-to-choose, easy-to-use products, and doing your makeup will be so much easier. The artistry should be in the products themselves!"
