Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner
We put Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner to the test after receiving a complimentary sample from the brand. Keep reading for our full product review.
Lip Liners are common must-haves in the makeup bags of many. It can be the culprit behind your signature look, it can give you that extra boost of confidence on a date night, or it can make you just a little more put together when you’re running out the door in the morning. I’m a firm believer that the backbone of a good lip is a great lip liner, which is why I was more than excited to try the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner. Its smooth texture is meant to provide a seamless application for a more defined lip. So could this product be worth the hype?
Read on for my review.
Best for: Fuller and defined lip shape, perfect for any occasion, waterproof formula
Byrdie Clean?: Yes
About the brand: Charlotte Tilbury is a UK-based cosmetics company founded in 2013. It is primarily known for its makeup and skincare lines.
About My Lips: Seasonally dry
My lips can be a hassle depending on the season. During warmer months, I rarely deal with dryness, which makes it a great time to experiment more with lipsticks, tints, or glosses. The fall to winter transition is often stressful and requires constant applications of lip balms and lip masks to keep them soft. So, if I want to wear lipstick in the winter, I prioritize investing in a brand that prides itself on its moisture.
How to Apply: Accentuate what you want
To apply the lip liner, I first took a general look at my lip shape to identify the look that I wanted to go for. I have a fuller lower lip, so I wanted to accentuate my upper lip just a little bit more and give the bottom lip more definition. The product glided across my lips without much effort. It was smooth but not smooth enough to the point where it could get messy. I paired the shade Hot Gossip with my go-to lipstick and added a little bit of concealer around my lips to set everything in place.
The Results: Hello fuller pout
I knew the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner would be good considering one is sold every 2 minutes (according to 2019 global brand sales data), but I didn’t expect to feel like I had unlocked an alter ego.
Not only did this product make the application process easy but it also did a great job at defining my lips.
I was slightly concerned that it would dry my lips out throughout the day, but it never did. I used this product on a relatively stressful day that required multiple cups of tea and coffee, but to my surprise, the liner stayed on the whole day. It was refreshing to know that between getting work done, running errands, and having multiple in-person conversations I didn’t have to worry about the product coming off or smudging.
The Value: Pricey, but worth it
This product sells for $24 which is a bit on the pricey side for just a single lip pencil. You can certainly get lip liners for cheaper. I wish they had a larger shade selection that allowed for more playful colors but the product follows through on what it says it does, which is a green flag for me.
Charlotte Tilbury also claims to be vegan-friendly, paraben-free, sulfate-free, and cruelty-free. They also do not sell their products in countries where testing on animals is required, which is a plus.

Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil ($20): This multipurpose matte, long-lasting Make Up For Ever pencil can be used on brows, lips, and eyes. It comes in 39 different shades ranging from neutral tones to vibrant colors. It currently sells for around the same price point at about $20.
NYX Professional Makeup Suede Matte Lip Liner ($4): Available in 48 colors, the NYX Professional Makeup Suede Matte Lip Liner comes at a lower price point of about $4. Similar to Charlotte Tilbury, this lip liner has a smooth matte application that is both vegan and cruelty-free.
I’ve overlooked lip liners in the past, but this one has completely changed my thoughts about how often I should be using it. I wish it was slightly more affordable but it holds up well throughout the day. The shades are beautiful, and I think that the darker tones are especially nice for fall and winter. If you’re willing to splurge a little to try out a good lip liner, I would recommend this one.
