Earlier this week, Make Up For Ever announced that it's teaming up with singer Charli XCX for the debut of its new Aqua XL Eye Pencils. The May launch features an updated formula—a waterproof range in 20 shades and five finishes—that will replace the brand's existing Aqua Eye Pencils.
“When I wear makeup, I can feel sexy, demure, classic, futuristic… so many different things. Make Up For Ever is vibrant, energetic and diverse. I can play with the products to suit my mood. That’s what I love the most," Charli says in a press release.
The brand also adds that this partnership is "the first of an ongoing series of artistic collaborations that highlight stage artists and their makeup artists."
We caught up with the singer and her makeup artist, Colby Smith, at the Aqua XL Eye Pencil event in New York City. Keep scrolling to read the Q&A, where she divulges all of her makeup must-haves.
BYRDIE: We know you love makeup, so tell us about your favorite look.
Charli XCX: Since I was really young, I've always loved a winged eye. Usually when I do it myself, I go for a classic cat eye with a thin line, but I like layering colors to create a bolder look. I also really love a stripped-back look. Like, completely dewy skin, a patted-on lip color, no foundation, and maybe mascara. Like, a really pure and innocent look.
Make Up For Ever
BYRDIE: Do you remember the first time you discovered the brand?
CX: Yes, it was on a photo shoot around the time I was 16. I remember a lot of the makeup artists always had the Color Palette with all the bright colors. I was like What is that? and would want them to use those colors on me. That palette is always the brightest thing in anyone's kit. So when Make Up For Ever approached me, I was like, Oh my gosh, of course!
Make Up For Ever
BYRDIE: What Make Up For Ever product are you totally obsessed with?
CX: I really really love the Ultra HD Foundation ($43), but my ultimate favorite is the Rouge Artist Lip Palette ($39). It's THE BEST! It comes with the cute little brush and is so small. I really love that [the formula] moisturizes lips, and you can do really do a lot with it.
BYRDIE: If you could only wear one shade from the line for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?
CX: So I really love D-62. It's a satin-y, almost metallic brown. It's a very neutral color for me. I used to only wear black when I was going for a daytime look, which kind of isn't a daytime look. So brown is a new discovery to me and it brings out the amber in my eyes, which I didn't even know until my makeup artist told me to try a brown liner! But I might also go with M-22, a blue that I can see myself wearing day and night.
Are you excited to try the new liners? Tell us in the comments!
