Jessica Chastain's New Layered Bob Is Summer Hair Goals
A really good hair makeover is right up there with finding the perfect red lipstick or picking out your signature scent. And when celebrities completely transform themselves with a blunt bob, mermaid-like extensions, or a Technicolor dye job, it often inspires us to try something new ourselves.
Since A-listers are constantly modifying their looks for new roles, new albums, or "new you" lifestyles, it can be hard to keep up with the hair trends of Hollywood. That's why we've taken it upon ourselves to update you on their latest and greatest hair transformations.
Simply scroll down to see the best celebrity hairstyles of the year—from buzz cuts to lobs and super-long extensions. Who knows? You might just be inspired to chop off your long locks or rock a daring new hair color.
We all know and love Jessica Chastain for her drop-dead gorgeous red locks. However, the actress recently overhauled her hair with a big chop—and we're here for it. Celebrity hairstylist Renato Campora debuted her new layered, chin-length bob on Instagram, and we don't think we've ever seen the actress's hair so short before. This is what you call a no-fuss, summer style done right. It's giving textured, wavy, beachy, summery vibes, so this major hair switch-up is good in our book.
Recently, Kim Kardashian West's hair trajectory has been something like this: jet black to platinum blonde to baby pink. And then back again. However, leave it to KKW to throw us a color curveball when we least expect it. And as of yesterday, that curveball is officially a luxe shade of "Blue Black" courtesy of her go-to colorist, Chris Appleton.
So what's the occasion for the switch-up? As People reports, Kardashian West's new dye job is for her current stint modeling the new Yeezy season 8 outfits. So now we're just left wondering how long Kim will keep the shade and what hair color will follow suit.
Transitioning blonde locks into a warmer strawberry tint is trending for summer, and we love the subtle statement it's made on Elisabeth Moss.
Although we initially predicted celebrities would be cutting their hair left and right this time of year, we've been seeing fewer length changes and more color changes—many of which have involved shades of neon and pastel. For instance, in just the past few weeks alone, model Hailey Baldwin went from pink to blonde and, now, to electric blue. It's unexpected, and we can't take our eyes away, which is 100% a good thing.
Rita Ora isn't exactly known for her timid approach to beauty, and while almost everyone else in Hollywood has been experimenting with various shades of hot pink and rose, the singer recently stunned us (in the best way possible) with a daring shade of orange. The gutsy hue is giving us major Rihanna vibes circa her 2011 Loud Tour, and we're into it.
J.Law's hairstylist Riawna Capri posted this photo on her Instagram today and we haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. The shoulder-skimming lob, the soft, air-dried waves—it’s the stuff our summer hair dreams are made of. Our go-to product for adding definition to curls and waves without any stickiness or stiffness? Leonor Greyl's Éclat Naturel Styling Cream ($46).

We're pretty sure Emma Roberts has made an appearance within our hair gallery more often than any other celebrity—which we kind of love. (After all, we admire anyone who has the creative and courageous knack to consistently switch up their hair look.) And most recently, she's snipped her already lob-length strands to a retro, chin-length look her hairstylist Chris McMillan officially coined the "hairline bob" on Instagram. For styling, all it requires is a bit of mousse, a few seconds under heat, and quick finger-comb to achieve lasting finish.
If you need a quick memory jog, we're used to seeing Emma Roberts with her signature lob or once-in-awhile extensions. And typically, she's much more likely to flirt with a fresh new color (she's been brunette, red, blond, pink, and back again) than she is with an actual chop. Consider us pleasantly thrilled.
Gigi Hadid is no stranger to switching it up in the hair category. Allure reports she took to Instagram a few days ago to debut new wispy bangs. While staying true to her hair chameleon roots, she snapped a video showing off her new tousled, wet style to go with her dark blonde hair. Her fringe bangs are on the shorter side and look perfect with her cut crease orange eye shadow and bronzed makeup. It's unclear if this is a wig or not, but we hope these bangs are here to stay for the summer.
Hadid has flirted with darker locks in the past and different styles. However, we're used to seeing the supermodel in her signature surfer-blonde color and tousled texture.
As soon as Ciara stepped onto the 2018 Billboard Music Awards red carpet, no one could look at anything but her '70s-esque, jet-black curls. Though Ciara has been back aboard the long-hair train for quite a few years now, we have not quite seen it this dark and vintage-inspired. As she mentioned live on the red carpet, the look was inspired by Diana Ross. Is it too earnest to say it looks so fabulous we could cry?
The last red carpet Ciara was photographed on was the Vanity Fair Oscars party, where she sported this smooth blowout with warm highlights.
Emma Roberts teased herself in pink hair earlier last month on the set of her upcoming movie, Paradise Hills. Her character, Uma, is kidnapped and sent to a sanitarium to have her mind "destroyed." Trippy, right? So given the fantasy genre of the film, pink hair seems fitting. Roberts gave us another sneak peek of the bubblegum hue today on her Insta story (above), and we'd almost wish she'd make it a permanent shade choice.
Prior to the transformation, Roberts wore a blonde lob with exposed dark roots.
Just last week we found out Vanessa Hudgens took a plunge to pink in the form of neon streaks placed edgily through her deep brunette strands. And this week, Katy Perry took the exact same color trend one step further by dyeing her entire head a similar bubbly shade of neon.
So what kind of magic did the buttery blush transformation entail? We received the exclusive scoop from Katy's go-to colorist, Rick Henry, who used Joico Color Intensity Butter in Pink ($20) on the singer. "As we traveled through Japan and Korea during Witness: The Tour, we just so happened to be there during the blooming of the cherry blossoms. They were everywhere. The different shades of pink were beautiful, which gave us the inspiration of what color we wanted to do to her hair. Being that Katy was already blonde, the entire process from start to finish took maybe 30 minutes," Henry tells us.
While the singer is no stranger to head-turning transformations where her length and color is concerned, she'd been steadily rocking various shades of blonde for a while.
We wouldn't necessarily say we're surprised, per se, when we learn a celebrity has updated their hair with a bold shade of neon or an on-par-for-spring hue of pastel. However, anticipating which celebrity has taken the plunge is what keeps us on our toes. And most recently (aka yesterday), Vanessa Hudgens was the latest to transform her signature brunette strands. As part of an epic collaboration with Matrix celebrity colorist Nick Stenson, Hudgens (who is the brand's newest #SoColorCult Icon) opted for neon streaks of hot pink to prep her short, Parisian-esque chop just in time for Coachella.
Previously, Vanessa Hudgens wore a cropped raven-colored bob with thick fringe.
While most celebrities are going from dark hair to platinum hair, Cara Delevingne is doing the opposite. She just debuted a darker new version of her formerly blonde pixie, complete with choppy, textured fringe. The new hair color paired with her smoky brown makeup is giving us major '90s vibes. Here, she's pictured at a book signing for her newly released young-adult novel, Mirror Mirror.
Cara Delevingne wore this white-blonde pixie since the inception of her shorter hairstyle.
Disney channel star and all-around badass feminist Rowan Blanchard has been chopping her hair shorter and shorter over the last few weeks. This time, though, hairstylist Laurie Heaps went for an above-the-shoulder length. When her dark hair is parted down the middle and paired with a '90s brick-red lip color, we can't help but reminisce about Posh Spice.
Blanchard kept her hair a bit below her shoulders and parted on the side before her above-the-shoulders lob.
With her killer bone structure (seriously, those cheekbones), we didn't think her face-framing cut could get much better. Until, of course, we checked our Instagram feed this morning.
Influenced by the actress's latest acting role (Dobrev plays Chloe, a Parisian artist, in the film Lucky Day) longtime friend and master celebrity hairstylist Riawna Capri gave her a fresh sweep of fringe (and slightly shorter length). The hairstyle is coined the "Nina-Bob," or the "Nob," and Capri refers to her work as a "chic, European concoction." We're in total agreement.
Nina Dobrev blew us away earlier this year when she chopped her super-long strands into a chic, shoulder-grazing bob. At the time, she was transitioning from her starring role in the CW hit The Vampire Diaries, and an invigorating hair change seemed both timely and appropriate.
It seems like everyone is dying their hair platinum. Kim Kardashian West, Emilia Clarke, and Solange Knowles are just a few of the recent celeb converts. Now, though, the trend has reached a whole new level of cool since it's suddenly French girl–approved.
Yesterday, French actress Marion Cotillard stepped out in a lime green suit (as one does), with newly blonde locks braided back into four sections. There's no word yet on whether or not Cotillard dyed her hair for a project or just for fun, but we love it. The naturally raven-haired actress looks stunning with this color, especially with her dark roots showing.
For years, Marion Cotillard stuck with her usual chestnut brunette hair, either straight curled with a slight French-girl bend.
To keep things fresh, Emma Roberts's go-to hairstylist, Riawna Capri, swapped out warmer notes of gold for an ashier shade of champagne this weekend. We predicted the shade would be major this fall, and we love the way it complements Roberts's porcelain complexion.
To maintain the integrity of the hair, Capri also noted in her Instagram post that she always trims her client's hair when adjusting color. Thus, Emma's chin-length crop is also a tad shorter than it was prior to her most recent color transformation.
Roberts is no stranger to major hair transformations, and over the years we've seen the actress debut every conceivable length and color. Recently, Roberts ditched her long auburn tresses in favor of a chin-grazing bob with hints of goldenrod and strawberry blonde.
The onset of fall typically warrants the transition to a darker hair color. However, this year it seems that celebrities are rebelling in the biggest way possible—with bleach. Joining the likes of Kim Kardashian West and Solange Knowles, actress Emilia Clarke (aka Khaleesi, Mother of Dragons), just went platinum. For real.
For years, Game of Thrones devotees have had an obsession with her character’s iconic platinum plaits, and this morning Clarke took to her Instagram to publicly announce her new commitment to the color. Even more exciting? According to her post, the colorists behind her majestic Khaleesi wigs (Candice Banks and Kevin Alexander) were also responsible for her own color transition. So far, we’ve only seen the ice-blonde dye job in its fresh (and wet!) state. Thus, it’s safe to say that we’re anxiously anticipating Clarke’s next Instagram post and red carpet appearance.
Emilia Clarke previously only wore blonde wigs as her character on Game of Thrones, sporting this baby-lighted bob on red carpets IRL.
Though she tends to stay true to her raven-hued hair color, Emily Ratajkowski loves a good game of "did she or didn't she?" where her cut is concerned—especially when it comes to a flash of face-framing fringe.
The actress and model took to her Instagram earlier today, setting her following afire thanks to a brand-new set of bangs. Spoiler: They're fake and all in the spirit of NYFW. However, according her caption, she's taking votes on whether to make the cut a permanent one. We'd vote yes.
Ratajkowski usually goes with a long, middle-parted style—no fuss, no frills.
Solange Knowles is no stranger to switching up her beauty looks. Her edgy, often highly editorial makeup is always inspiring. Her natural hair is too. Though we've gotten used to seeing her with brown hair, Knowles has gone totally platinum.
She posted a photo to Instagram yesterday with a cropped platinum cut, and today, she debuted long platinum braids. She's the latest celeb to go platinum after Kim K., Zoë Kravitz, and Kristen Stewart (to name a few).
Though Solange has worn long braids, short cuts, and layered blow-outs in the past, she's shown off this enviable Afro as of late.
Kim Kardashian West stunned us all by appearing at the Tom Ford S/S 18 show with silvery-blonde hair. The best part? It's not a wig. The hairstylist responsible for this look, Chris Appleton, took to Instagram, posting a boomerang of her getting ready. He captioned the video "guess who? Seeing if blondes have more fun! Silver white hair vibes! It's NYFW! Colour and cut by me." Then, earlier today, Kardashian West posted a photo on Twitter, writing, "No, it's not a wig!"
Before the blonde, Kardashian had been doing the Cher-inspired, super-long, slick hair for a few months.
Selena Gomez's hairstylist, Hung Vanngo, posted this selfie to his Instagram account. Her new slicked-back bob is for an upcoming (albeit secret) project. We think it's perfectly chic for fall.
We're used to seeing Gomez with this long, layered style—in fact, she's said in previous interviews she'd never cut her hair.
Bella Hadid's hair has gotten progressively shorter over the course of 2017—and we have a feeling that her latest choppy bob is about to set a major new trend.
After going for the initial chop—from long to lob-length, Hadid kept her hair just dusting her shoulders for a while before going even shorter.
Karlie Kloss might have debuted her silver locks just in time for summer, but we’re already thinking ahead: This color trend will be huge this fall.
Before platinum, Kloss kept things low maintenance with a rooty, golden ombré.
Chrissy Teigen took to Twitter on Fourth of July weekend to show off a new sun-kissed color.
Previously, she wore a darker brunette with caramel-colored highlights.
In 2017 alone, Roberts has donned blonde, red, and chestnut tresses.
Emma Stone stepped out in England this weekend with much lighter locks, trading her usual deep red for a paler shade of strawberry blonde.
Here, Stone wears her usual red we've all come to know (and love).
Karlie Kloss debuted a surprising new 'do on the 2017 Met Gala red carpet, an asymmetrical bob reminiscent of the '90s. Oh, and did we mention she also dyed her hair platinum blonde?
Kloss usually rocked a highlighted, California-girl vibe.
Gomez wore a shorter, layered lob to a fashion show earlier this year.
There’s no place like Coachella to try out a bold new ’do—even if, as in Ashley Benson’s case, it appears to be temporary. (Might we suggest making the hot pink hue a full-time thing?)
Before the candy-coated pink, Benson showed off a more subdued blonde look.
