Margot Robbie's transformation from Gold Coast girl to bona fide Hollywood star has been a dream to watch unfold. While her undeniable talent and down-to-earth personality are rocketing her career, Robbie's beauty transformation has been helped along by an A-list team of pros—none more so than Moroccanoil Celebrity Hairstylist Bryce Scarlett. Scarlett creates hair magic for the likes of Natalie Portman, Lily Aldridge, Gigi and Bella Hadid to name a few, and was personally responsible for Robbie's perfectly undone waves for the 2018 Academy Awards.
Scarlett exclusively used Moroccanoil products to create the look—fun fact: 2018 marks 10 years since Moroccanoil debuted in the beauty market with its signature (and now iconic) Moroccanoil Treatment, which pioneered the oil-infused beauty revolution. The brand has been hydrating and repairing our strands ever since. To celebrate Moroccanoil's 10-year anniversary, we quizzed Scarlett for the hair tips he gives his star clients. And from the most underrated hair product to whether we should chop or not, he's answered your most pressing hair questions.
As a professional hairstylist, what do you want every woman to understand about hair care?
I always tell people to treat their hair as they do their skin—to protect and care for it in the same manner, as it's just as fragile. Some days your skin needs a heavy moisturiser, some days it needs to be deeply cleansed, and your hair is no different. Using products infused with argan oil ensures that while you're styling and shaping your hair you're also nourishing and protecting it.
What are the most timeless, classic red carpet hairstyles?
I'd say the most timeless and classic hairstyles for a formal situation will always be a low chignon in whatever parting suits you best. Or brushed-out waves—these change a bit depending on the era, but there's always been a version of a brushed-out wave that is elegant and timeless.
What is your favourite red carpet look that you've created?
One of my favourite hairstyles ever was an up-swept Grecian look I did for Natalie Portman at last year's Screen Actor's Guild Awards. I wrapped her already blown-out hair into small curls around a one-inch curling wand and pinned them in place to set. Once cooled, I brushed the curls up and away from the face and neck, settling them on the crown of the head in a lengthening shape that was both regal, yet soft and easy.
How do you make sure your celebrity clients' hair stays healthy when they are constantly styling it for work?
Moroccanoil Perfect Defense ($68) is an amazing new product that helps protect hair against the damaging effects of heat styling. As a stylist the health of my clients' hair is so important, so I always make sure to protect it against the sometimes-negative effects of heat styling as best as I can.
How should we deal with damaged hair without chopping it all off?
I like to use products with moisturising ingredients to help strengthen the hair strand and keep it from breakage and further splitting. I love that Moroccanoil Mending Infusion ($68) seals split ends and is packed with antioxidants and amino acids that make ends super silky. When split ends are sealed, it gives the appearance of healthy-looking hair.
What is the most underrated hair product?
I think hairsprays have gotten a bad reputation over the years, being perceived as something to create hard shapes only. Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium ($42) is infused with argan oil, creating a hold that is movable and lived in—it's a great way to define and enhance any hairstyle.
Can you tell us which hair trends are about to be big?
I'm loving shoulder-length asymmetrical bobs that feel super modern, yet very feminine. I also love blunt-cut, chin-length square bobs that give a 90s cool-girl feel.
Lastly, if you had to pick five products that every woman should have in her hair kit, what would they be?
Moroccanoil Original Treatment ($64) is a product I love for any and all hair types! I think this is a must-have in everyone’s hair routine. Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray ($53) is another must-have product. When styling, it's important that the hair has texture for grit and grip, which also helps hold your updo. A great de-tangling brush for in or out of the shower saves time and helps treat hair gently. A blow dryer with a diffuser attachment can be used in so many ways to enhance hair’s natural texture—it isn't just for curly hair anymore! And lastly, dry shampoo is a game changer. Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo ($43) comes in light and dark tones, and you never end up with a powder residue.
