There's a universal look of awe, shock, and confusion that flashes over our faces when we look at celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Gabrielle Union-Wade. Both are in their mid- to late-40s and continue to defy the aging process with a mystique we can't quite wrap our heads around. Given their practically limitless access to resources, they've certainly got the upper hand in the aging playbook (in addition to an alpha gene pool), but their extensive knowledge base makes them trustworthy sources for learning how to bathe in the same fountain of youth they've so expertly discovered. Below we've rounded up the products and wellness tips they credit for their ageless complexions.
Gabrielle Union-Wade is an enigma. We don't quite understand how her skin is so perfect, but we'll follow whatever steps she takes to keep it virtually free of wrinkles and imperfections. In a recent interview, she told us the key is drinking a gallon of water every day (in addition to plenty of red wine—here, here!). In terms of products, she's a big fan of Luzern Laboratories (she uses the Brightening Serum, $115, and Oxygen Cream, $175) and Mirigal oil.
Considering Cindy Crawford hasn't changed much over the past two decades, it's no wonder the supermodel sold over $100 million in products from her eponymous skincare line in 2014. But in addition to using her own products, she turns to cult-loved Crème de la Mer for smooth, moisturized skin, as well as the Foreo Luna Mini in the morning to increase circulation and get rid of pillow face. Otherwise, she's a big fan of logging as many hours of sleep as possible, exercising, and (get this) skipping coffee altogether. No wonder her whites are so pearly.
There are few women capable of making heads turn and jaws drop at the same magnitude as Naomi Campbell. And at 48 years young, she's never looked better. Her secret? Staying away from sugar. In addition to contributing to weight gain and weakening the immune system, sugar causes inflammation and breaks down collagen, meaning your skin will lose its bounce and elasticity and see more unwanted puffiness, breakouts, and dark circles.
While Nicole Kidman would prefer not to put appearance in the same equation as aging ("I just go, in the moment, in the moment, in the moment, which is the easiest thing to say and the hardest thing to do," she tells us), one of her best tips for keeping her skin tight is splashing cold water on her face first thing in the morning. She explains, "I think I do that because when I was young, I would swim in the ocean in Australia, so there's something connected to starting the day with cold water. There's something about the ocean—the salt—that feels so good for you."
When we tried to pry J.Lo's beauty and skincare secrets from her, she remained pretty tight-lipped, but what she did reveal was her off-stage rituals, which help keep her centered, "loose", and healthy. "I have certain after-show routines, like making sure I take off all my makeup or stretching my muscles," she tells us. "I also frequently get massages to loosen up my body and have toxins flushed out of my body."
In an Instagram Live with Christie Brinkley, we asked her which skincare rituals she's been doing the longest, and the most prominent was exfoliation. She told us she's been doing it since she was 19 after reading an article that said men tend to look five years younger than women their same age because shaving softens and smooths their skin, so she took it upon herself to even the playing field and exfoliate daily. Back then, she'd use ground-up walnut shells and sand, but having learned about the dangers of harsh physical exfoliators creating micro-tears in the skin, she's switched to gentler formulas like her Complete Clarity Daily Facial Exfoliating Polish ($17).
Padma Lakshmi's secret to small pores and clear skin is so genius that we wish we'd known sooner. While it's fairly common knowledge that honey has antibacterial properties, the consistency also makes it an important skin savior: Lakshmi told us she applies it to her skin and then taps it with her fingers like piano keys and that in doing so, impurities are pulled out of the pores as the honey sticks to your fingers with each tap.
