In this week’s column, Author, columnist, wellness advocate, and founder of The Beauty Chef Carla Oates so kindly walked us through every single step in her expertly-curated skincare routine. Describe your approach to skincare?
I’ve always favoured simplicity when it comes to skincare, choosing products that are free of synthetic chemicals and certified organic. Essentially, I like products that are healthy but perform well. My philosophy has also always been that beauty begins in the belly, so I prefer to nourish my skin from the inside. This approach really creates a radiance that no amount of products can replicate.
How do you go about choosing your products?
I always opt for products that are free of synthetic chemicals and fragrances. I love brands and products that are natural, derived from plant-compounds and wholefood sources, and those that are certified organic. Our skin is our largest organ and also our first line of defence when it comes to environmental toxins and pathogens, so it’s important that we nourish it in the same way we do our gut health, and only apply products topically that we are happy to be absorbed into our body.
Do you have any skin issues you’re currently treating?
My skin is a little tired at the moment, so I've been applying regular fresh food masks: papaya, a little turmeric, white clay and yoghurt does wonders to brighten and rejuvenate.
What products do you buy over and over again?
Sodashi Rejuvenating Serum ($125), organic coconut oil, organic rosehip oil, Ere Perez Foundation ($44), MV Organic Skincare Rose Soothing and Protective Moisturiser ($115), and Eminence Organics Stone Crop Serum ($69).
Anything you would never use on your skin?
We are exposed to a myriad of chemicals and toxins every day in our environment, so when it comes to skincare, it’s important to do our best to keep things as clean as possible. A few ingredients to watch out for are parabens, silicones, and phthalates.
Walk us through your morning routine.
To be honest, my beauty routine as far as skincare goes generally takes place at night because because this is when all the good stuff happens and the skin can truly rejuvenate. But in the morning, I’ll often for a walk or run along Bondi Beach, and when I come home I drink a glass of Glow Inner Beauty Powder ($60) in filtered water with Collagen Inner Beauty Boost ($40).
First of all, I gently cleanse my face using coconut oil and a muslin cloth to wash away grease and grime. Oil is very effective for lifting dirt from the skin and coconut oil boasts both antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, making it the perfect cleanser. I then dab a little Probiotic Skin Refiner ($60) onto a cotton wool pad and swipe it over my face to gently refine my skin, balance the skin’s natural flora and stimulate collagen production (thanks to the natural lactic acid). Then I apply a little Beauty Fix Balm ($25) under my eyes, on my lips and any dry patches. Before heading to bed, I also enjoy a teaspoon of Sleep Inner Beauty Powder ($50) stirred through warm coconut milk. I am addicted to this ritual—it’s so delicious and soothing and rich in beneficial bacteria so while I sleep, I am nourishing my gut.
