Ben Gorham is like the beauty industry’s version of Leonardo da Vinci. Unisex fragrances, leather goods, sunglasses, and cashmere blankets are all designed on his Byredo workbench. After two years of R&D, the renaissance designer can now add gender-neutral cosmetics to his growing product roster.
Today, Byredo unveiled its highly-anticipated unisex cosmetics collection. In collaboration with makeup artist and Dazed Beauty Creative Director Isamaya Ffrench, Byredo’s makeup line shows off seven satin lipstick shades, eight matte lipstick shades, a lip balm, sixteen multiple-purpose color sticks, a black mascara, black eyeliner, and three eyeshadow compacts featuring five colors each. The geometrically intriguing and futuristic packaging really caught our eye, much like the campaign to go along with the launch.
While the full ingredient list remains under wraps, we’re told they are clean and all-natural in spite of the products’ high-performance and pigment quality. Sounds like a win-win. The brand also assures us that despite the products’ exceptional quality, they don’t demand an expert or advanced level of makeup application. Simply put: anyone can wear it however they want to.
Byredo’s foray into the cosmetics comes from Gorham’s boredom with beauty thus far. He explains, “As I started to really look at the beauty world, I found much of it conservative and conventional. I thought we can do this, and we can do it differently. Ultimately, beauty is subjective—Byredo makeup had to reflect that.”
Personally, I’m most looking forward to trying the multi-purpose color sticks. The product opens a whole new world of possibility for makeup lovers who enjoy flexing their artistic freedom.
Byredo's color sticks, lipsticks, lip balm, eyeliner, mascara launch will be available in stores and online at Byredo.com October 1. The eyeshadow compacts will be available in November.
