Let's Talk About Spots After Threading

Updated 01/08/19

We’ve all been there: Your brows have been waxed or threaded to perfection, only for you to wake the next day to an unwanted breakout, right between your “fresh from the salon” arches. So what exactly is it that causes spots to appear after hair removal and how can you prevent them? Read on for our top tips for keeping pimples at bay, leaving you with smooth, spot-free skin every time.

First things first, let’s talk about dirt. “When threading, hygiene is hugely important,” explains Vanita Parti, founder of Blink Brow Bar. “Your hair is being whipped out from their follicles, so dirt can creep in.” To combat this, it’s a good idea to wash your face before your brow appointment to make sure your skin is as clean as possible. If you can’t go for a full-on cleanse, a sweep of micellar water across your brows will go some way to removing any dirt and pollution that’s transferred to your skin during your day.

Now that the dirt’s taken care of, it’s time to talk exfoliation. A buildup of dead skin cells can quickly cause a crop of spots to appear post-brow wax if they make their way into your open follicles. Using a gentle exfoliator or cleansing with a warm washcloth ahead of your appointment will help get the area around your brows as smooth as possible before you get started.

Not only is your skin hygiene key to prevention, but the cleanliness of the salon you go to is also crucial. “We always ensure that the therapists and customers sanitise their hands before a treatment and that fresh thread is used,” says Parti. While it might be tempting to scrimp on the cost of hair removal, opting for a reputable establishment will hopefully save you the cost of unwanted breakout later.

So the threading is complete and your freshly plucked brows are looking on point. Now what? Your hair follicles are open, which means that there’s a high risk of unwanted elements like pollution and sweat making their way beneath the surface of your skin. To reduce the risk, avoid working out after your waxing or threading appointment, and don’t use any harsh products on your skin for up to 24 hours afterwards.

First time threading or waxing? Even if you follow all of our tips and tricks, there’s a chance that you might experience some redness or bumps on your skin. “No reason to panic,” Parti advises, “as this normally goes down in a few hours, if not minutes.” Applying a naturally soothing aloe vera gel or a cold compress to your brows afterwards should help to bring everything back into balance.
