We already spoke with Hillary Peterson, the founder and president of all-natural skincare line True Botanicals. Next, we have Nancy Twine, the founder and CEO of haircare company Briogeo. Twine has been a beauty lover since her early childhood, when she learned DIY recipes from her grandmother. After noticing a lack of good products in the market made for her hair type, she decided to make her own. This passion sparked a complete career shift for Twine, from working on Wall Street to birthing Briogeo. The success of her products made Twine the youngest black woman to launch a line at Sephora. Read on for an inside look at a busy day in her life, and see how she magically squeezes in meditation in between meetings.
Her Morning Routine
6:30 a.m. I typically wake up at this time. One of the first things I like to do is a 15-minute meditation. I get into a traditional posture on a fluffy rug on my bed and sit Indian style. When I meditate, I set my day up for productivity and positive energy. It really does impact my outlook on the day. I do this to calm my mind and thoughts and meditate on the things that I want and am grateful for. It helps me recognize and pay respect toward the great things that I have in my life. It also allows me to put out into the universe the things that I want.
This is something that I hadn’t done before. But I read a book by Gabrielle Bernstein called The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear to Faith. One of the things she talks a lot about is putting out into the universe what it is that you want to accomplish. And if you really meditate and take the steps to work toward it, it will manifest. This is something I really believe in.
7 a.m. I’m a morning-shower person. I have a very simple routine. Sometimes, I use our shampoos as body wash. I know that sounds crazy, but the surfactants in our shampoos are so gentle. I really love using our Briogeo Be Gentle Be Kind Green Tea Shampoo ($24) as body wash. I like to reduce clutter in my bathroom and minimize the amount of stuff in my shower. So using that shampoo as body wash is definitely one of my hacks for that since they’re so gentle. I wash my hair with Briogeo’s Superfoods Collection Be Gentle Be Kind Kale and Apple shampoo ($28) and conditioner ($28).
I follow up with our Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray ($20) to help detangle. I always seal my ends with an oil because I typically do blow-dry my hair. Sealing my ends makes sure I don’t lose a lot of moisture during my blow-dry process.
7:30 a.m. I always moisturize my skin right after the shower because my skin tends to be really, really dry. I’ve been using the Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter ($35), which I love. It goes on so well because it’s not greasy or sticky and absorbs really nicely. I’m wearing a lot more shorts and skirts these days, so I have to make sure my legs and my feet are hydrated. I’ve been a really big fan of Drunk Elephant skincare. I’m pretty much using their entire regimen. The best cleanser I’ve found is Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser ($18).
7:45 a.m. I haven’t been wearing much makeup lately. But I do my brows with an eyebrow powder because I can’t leave my house without them on. Then, I use Glossier’s Lash Slick mascara ($16), which I really like. I have a Bite Beauty Agave Lip Balm ($18) I swipe on afterward to hydrate my lips. Sometimes, I may put a bit of Ilia Tinted Lip Conditioner ($28) in Arabian Nights on top to add a little bit of color to my lips. During the summer, I don’t use foundation because it’s so humid and hot. I keep it as light as possible.
In the Office
8:30 a.m. Our office officially starts at 9 a.m., but I like to get in around this time to catch up on emails. This helps me get organized before the day starts, which is so important for me. Once 9 a.m. starts, I’m pretty much in back-to-back meetings. I’m also spending so much time these days interviewing. So my schedule is nonstop these days.
9 a.m. I’m not a heavy-breakfast person. I have a 16-ounce glass of green tea, which carries me through lunchtime. It feels like a hydration detox every morning. I love the antioxidant benefits of green tea first thing in the morning.
1 p.m. My assistant, who I just hired last week, makes sure that I eat lunch every day at the right time. She's been a game changer. Sometimes, I get so busy that I forget. I usually have a salad, smoothie, or a sandwich. I like to have a light lunch because if I eat too heavy during the day, it puts me into a slump. I have to maintain my energy throughout the day, and a light lunch helps me do that.
3 p.m. For the most part, I’m glued to my office all day. But on days when I do have a lighter schedule, I like to take a walk to Madison Square Park. I find a bench, sit in the sun, and do a five to 10-minute meditation. I love being able to take midday walks and soak up sunrays. It's so energizing.
7:30 p.m. I head to acroyoga, which I’m obsessed with. It’s a mix of acrobatics and yoga. Other days, I head to Dumbo House, which is Brooklyn's Soho House, and meet up with friends. It’s such a nice way to unwind after a long day.
10 p.m. I get home and make myself a small bite if I hadn't eaten already. I really don’t like to eat much past 9 p.m. because it actually affects the way I feel the next day.
10:30 p.m. I invested in a Slip Silk Pillowcase ($85), which is so good for my skin and hair. I pineapple my hair to the top of my head. When I do this, my roots have extra volume in the morning. I don’t have to wrap my hair when I’m sleeping on my silk pillowcase. I like to do this before I start my skincare routine. At night, I use a more intense cleanser to remove my makeup. I like Tata Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser ($82). It’s really gentle but does a good job of exfoliating my skin and removing makeup.
10:45 p.m. I do check a couple of emails before bed. I try not to. I know it’s bad, but it’s the nature of running a company. You have to be aware of what’s happening. I limit this to 10 minutes.
11 p.m. I try to get to bed at this time. I don’t watch TV at all, but what I’ll do with any other free time is call a friend to catch up or journal. Part of the concept of manifesting your dreams and goals is through journaling. I also like to do a 10-minute meditation before I go to bed because it helps me sleep better. It also calms my thoughts and is a nice transition from checking email to heading to sleep.
