Bread Beauty Supply

Bread Beauty Supply is a new buzzy brand that carved out a place in the hair category thanks to its carefully curated lineup of curl-friendly basics. The brand's lineup is focused on offering easy-to-use products that make wash day less complicated.

For the past year, I've been on a journey to restore my hair's health from going beach blonde, and I've actively searched for brands and products to help achieve healthier hair. Bread's curated selection of smart yet effective products is right up my alley for healthier hair without fuss. The brand recently launched its Mud Mask Pre-Wash Clay Treatment ($34), designed to detoxify and treat your scalp before you shampoo and condition.

I tried the mud mask to see how it stacked up in my wash-day routine. Read ahead for my honest thoughts.

Best For: Textured hair looking for scalp exfoliation, but can be used by all hair types

Uses: Pre-shampoo treatment that exfoliates scalp and revives curls

Active Ingredients: Clay, quartz, broccoli extract, matcha tea leaf extract

Byrdie Clean: Yes

Pricing: $34

About the brand: Founded by Maeva Heim in 2020, Bread Beauty Supply provides high-quality hair care products for textured and curly hair. It features a range of products with clean ingredients to help create fantastic wash day results.

About My Hair: Always in need of moisture

I've been trying to restore my hair from dyeing it beach blond last year, and I've experienced breakage, dryness, and product-build up in the process. I usually follow the LOC method and attend the gym regularly, so I accumulate a lot of product buildup and sweat on my scalp throughout the week.

I don't typically use hair detoxes or scalp products outside a scalp massager. Regarding hair results, I usually seek volume and frizz control, and I admittedly forget about my scalp. Still, scalp care is something I am working on getting better with.

The Feel: Thick and creamy

The Bread Mud Mask has a thick consistency and a very light scent. It's much heavier than a deep conditioner, and because of its clay base, it doesn't squeeze out of its tube very easily. Once the formula is out, I recommend warming the product up with your fingers and then applying it to your scalp in sections.

The Application: Apply it in sections

This product isn't meant to be applied at once. Because of its gritty texture and thick consistency, I recommend applying it in sections along your roots for the best results. It is a pre-wash treatment, so your hair doesn't have to be wet or clean to use this product.

This product isn't meant to be applied at once. Because of its gritty texture and thick consistency, I recommend applying it in sections along your roots for the best results. It is a pre-wash treatment, so your hair doesn't have to be wet or clean to use this product. I recommend using disposable gloves to apply the product and massage it into your scalp as you work through each section. Once I covered my scalp with the mask, I wrapped my hair with a plastic cap and left it on for 20 minutes. I felt no tingling or discomfort with the mask, but my scalp felt soothed.

The Results: Clean, soft roots

Once I rinsed the mask from my hair, I proceeded with my wash day as usual. I've heard that some scalp masks can make your hair feel brittle or dry, but that wasn't the case. This was easy to rinse out, and my scalp and roots felt clean and smooth.

The Value: Pricey but worth the investment

For $34, you get 8.3 ounces in a squeezable tube that you can apply directly to the scalp. While the product may be pricier, it's worth having in your collection when your scalp and hair need a quick reset.

Similar Products: You've got options

Bounce Curl Turmeric Hair Detox Mask ($26): This mask isn't as thick as the Bread formula, but it packs a strong ingredients list with apple cider vinegar, charcoal, turmeric, and green tea to buff off scalp buildup.

Rizos Curls Detox Scalp Scrub ($41): This formula has aloe vera, pink clay, and peppermint oil to help soothe dry, itchy, and oily scalps.

Curlsmith Wash & Scrub Detox Shampoo ($28): This formula uses volcanic-derived minerals as its exfoliating agent. It's also packed with clarifying ingredients like apple cider vinegar to exfoliate the scalp while cleansing simultaneously.

Final Verdict

This is a great product that can be used to improve and soothe your scalp in one easy step. In addition to the cooling sensation, I loved that my scalp actually looked and felt cleaner. I'll definitely be making this a regular part of my hair care routine.
