Lately, we can’t open a magazine or scroll Instagram without drooling over the latest hair craze—boxer braids. From Nike ads to Katy Perry and Khloe Kardashian, the sporty hairstyle is everywhere. We dig it mainly because it takes a sweet everyday braid and gives it some much-appreciated edge.
Not ones to just admire a trend from a distance, we visited Joey Perrotti, a hairstylist at West Hollywood's 901too Salon, to find out how it's done. Keep scrolling for a step-by-step boxer-braid tutorial from the man who created Vanessa Hudgens's recent selfie-worthy hair-extension version.
Split hair in half down the natural part (for a less drastic look than a forced center part) using a rattail comb to achieve a straight line.
Clip away one side of hair. On the unclipped side, grab the section of hair at the top of your head and divide into three equal sections and start braiding from the top.
Continue braiding until there is no hair left. Repeat on the other side.
Add a little volumizing powder such as UNITE Expanda Dust ($29).
To finish, pull apart the braid just a little with your fingers to give it a slightly disheveled look.
