Moisturizing from head-to-toe is important. Applying sunscreen is important. So why not combine the two and lighten up your beauty routine? “Using a body lotion with SPF hydrates your skin and provides sun protection in one simple step,” says Dr. Marie Hayag, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Fifth Avenue Aesthetics.
With a variety of lotions out there, Dr. Hayag suggests finding a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB lotion with a high SPF. “The higher the SPF, the better. There is no such thing as a maximum SPF,” she says. However, it’s important to remember that the efficacy of your SPF depends on how well you apply it. “A shot glass amount is ideal for your body, and it should be applied every two hours, especially if you’re outdoors.”
With that golden rule in mind, explore our picks for the best body lotions with SPF below.
Best Overall: Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Mineral SPF 45 Body Butter
Slather on this best-selling body butter with a broad-spectrum twist. Infused with their iconic 100% pure argan oil, this lotion truly feels luxurious on the skin. And the SPF 45 is just the icing on the cake.
Best Budget: Alba Botanica Very Emollient Body Lotion
A cocktail of aloe vera, chamomile extracts, and antioxidants make this body lotion the perfect go-to. Byrdie contributing writer Joline Buscemi loved the value of the product when she tested it—it’s a whopping 32 ounces and comes with a handy pump for easy application.
Best Drugstore: Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion With Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15
Reviewers love how this formula glides right on, without that oily or sticky feel. With a combo of hydrating vitamin B5 and broad-spectrum SPF 15, it’s the perfect addition to your daily skincare routine.
Best Splurge: Sisley-Paris Super Creme Body Sunscreen Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 15
This Sisley-Paris body cream may be splurgy, but it’s super luxurious. The formula includes an exclusive skin-protecting complex of free radical-fighting plant extracts, geranium, and lavender to keep the skin supple and promote an even tone, while shea butter and plant glycerin add extra hydration benefits. This one is ideal for those who tan easily or are already tanned—those more prone to burning should opt for a product with higher SPF.
Best for Sensitive Skin: Eucerin Daily Hydration Body Cream with SPF 30
This 2-in-1 body lotion and sunscreen from Eucerin is perfect for daily use. It provides broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection from the sun's UV rays and is enriched with sunflower oil and provitamin B5 to deliver lightweight hydration, sans the greasy residue associated with most sunscreens. Best of all, it’s formulated without fragrance or dyes, so those with sensitive skin can slather this on without fear of irritation.
Best for Dry Skin: Hempz Yuzu & Starfruit Daily Herbal Lotion
Thirsty skin has found its soulmate. Infused with 100% pure hemp seed oil, this formula does everything from nourish to repair to moisturize. The best part? The light scent, which some have described as tropical and fruity.
Best for Dull Skin: Glytone Daily Body Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 15
The shea butter in the formula provides moisturizing benefits, while the glycolic acid exfoliates to remove dead skin. “And the added sun protection makes this an ideal, multifunctional lotion,” says Dr. Hayag.
Best Anti-Aging: Supergoop! Forever Young Body Butter with Sea Buckthorn SPF 40
Hands down, the high SPF 40 is the best anti-ager in this formula. However, it also features a slew of ingredients to keep your skin bright and tight—like fatty-acid-enriched sea buckthorn, argan oil, and meadowfoam seed oil. And we can’t forget to call out the rich, creamy texture, which makes the application feel like a spa moment.
Best Reef-Safe: Unsun Cosmetics Everyday Body Lotion SPF 15
This silky body lotion is great for your skin and the environment. Its formula is reef-safe, meaning it doesn't contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have both been shown to cause harm to coral reefs. Instead, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provide broad-spectrum SPF 15 protection while shea butter and green tea leaf extract nourish the skin. It's also cruelty-free and doesn't contain sulfates, parabens, phthalates, or artificial fragrances.
Best Fragrance-Free: Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion With Broad Spectrum SPF 15
Soothing colloidal oatmeal not only replenishes moisture without irritation, but it also works to protect the skin with a barrier that locks that moisture in. Plus, there is no added fragrance, so it’s perfect for those with sensitive noses.
Best Cooling: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Cooling Water-Lotion Sunscreen
Dr. Hayag recommends this refreshing lotion for its Cell-Ox Shield technology that delivers broad-spectrum protection, even in high temps. “It’s also loaded with antioxidants for extra protection and repair,” she adds. Bonus? It works for both the face and body and doesn't leave behind that greasy feeling normally associated with sunscreen.
Best Organic: Juice Beauty SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen
Aloe vera is a naturally derived ingredient known for its soothing and moisturizing properties. The aloe plant's inner gel mucilage (the part that's used in skin care products) is made up of 99.5% water.
With key ingredients like jojoba oil, coconut oil, and aloe vera, this lotion packs a moisturizing punch. It’s also water-resistant, so it’s a great formula to apply before you go for a run, hit the beach, or lounge by the pool.
Best Illuminating: Supergoop! Glowscreen Body SPF 40 PA+++
Who doesn’t love a little shimmer, especially during summer months? This delightfully whipped body lotion from Supergoop! is subtle, giving the skin a hint of glimmer with light-reflecting minerals. It doesn’t skimp on the moisture benefits, either. Emollients like coconut alkanes lock in hydration to keep the skin silky and smooth, and white stargrass helps to protect it from oxidative stress. Plus, it provides SPF 40 protection from the sun.
Hands down, if you’re seeking full body hydration and ample sun protection, Josie Maran’s Whipped Argan Oil SPF 45 Body Butter is the way to go. The light-as-air formula is infused with 100% pure argan oil to deeply nourish and offers mineral-based SPF 45 protection. No wonder it’s a best-seller. We’re also big fans of the Hempz Yuzu & Starfruit Daily Herbal Lotion, which is essentially a hydrating tropical cocktail for the skin that just so happens to protect us from the sun, too. And finally, we love Glytone’s Daily Body Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 15 for its ability to deeply moisturize while gently exfoliating dead skin with the added benefit of SPF 15.
What to Look for in a Body Lotion with SPF
Ample Sun Protection
If you’re planning to use an SPF body lotion as your actual sunscreen, Dr. Hayag recommends opting for products that offer at least SPF 30 sun protection. “Look for UVA/UVB broad spectrum mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and/or chemical ingredients like ecamsule (mexoryl) or La Roche-Posay’s Cell-Ox Shield,” she adds.
Some products on our list offer less than SPF 30 and are still great options for daily wear, just be sure to reapply them consistently, especially if you’ll be outdoors—and definitely reach for a stronger product if you plan to hit the beach.
We all love to pamper ourselves with a good body butter from time to time, but when it comes to SPF body lotions that we’ll be wearing on the daily, Dr. Hayag recommends looking for a product that’s more lightweight in texture. “No one wants to feel sticky all day long,” she says. We sure don’t!
Make the most out of your body lotion by choosing a product that offers more than just light hydration and sun protection. Dr. Hayag suggests reaching for lotions that are packed with antioxidants or nourishing, barrier-protecting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and shea butter. Looking to brighten dull skin? Opt for a product with a gentle chemical exfoliant like an AHA.
