Blushadow Is 2019's Modern Way to Apply Blusher

Updated 04/25/19

I don't know about you, but over the last few years, I've kind of forgotten about blusher. Blame the popularity of contouring with bronzer or everyone's new-found obsession with highlighter, but it seems like everyone's trusty blusher pots have found their way to the bottom of their makeup bag—and stayed there, forgotten and alone. Until now, that is, because celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey is making a case for bringing back blusher—and in a big way. Enter blushadow—the modern way to wear blusher in 2019 and beyond.

I recently caught up with Dempsey when she was over in the UK, and she taught me first hand how to blushadow. Seen above on Emilia Clarke at the 2018 Met Gala (which Dempsey did her makeup for, naturally), blushadow is where colour is swept up the cheek and onto the eyelids. It's a combination between blusher and eye shadow, and it's seriously wearable.

Why is it more wearable than normal blusher? By combining your blusher and eye shadow together, you're not only creating the quickest and easiest makeup look known to man, but you're also tieing together your whole face. Thanks to the creamy consistency of Dempsey's cheek tints, you can get that post-workout flushed-cheeks glow.

Use your fingertips to apply a peachy-toned blush to the apples of your cheeks, bringing it up into your temples and slightly onto your eyelids. Dempsey notes that cream products are easiest to use for this kind of look, as they're soft to blend and manipulate into the skin—leaving you with a very natural blush from within.

Next, take a brighter pop of colour and add this to the apples of your cheeks. This gives your blush even more definition, wakening up the entire face.
