If you're into YouTube beauty tutorials, odds are you've watched 23-year-old vlogger Blair Fowler. Fowler got into the YouTube game early, and using the handle juicystar07, she's been charming viewers with her makeup and hair tutorials, hauls, tags, reviews, and bubbly persona for the past seven years. She and her sister, Elle, have inspired thousands of other YouTube beauty gurus to follow in their footsteps. In fact, if you're a dedicated YouTube viewer, Fowler is probably responsible for teaching you some essential beauty trick, from how to curl your hair with a wand to how to create no-makeup makeup.
Fowler is still in the beauty game, and like many beauty influencers, she's started branching out into other projects too. (Catch her in the just-released Y.A. film Jessica Darling's It List, now available on iTunes.)
We met up with Fowler in Laguna Beach at an oceanside soirée for Billabong and John Frieda. (Trust us when we say her hair is even shinier IRL.) Later, we got to catch up with the vlogger about how she's evolved since she first started on YouTube, her beauty essentials of the moment, and her tips for looking flawless on social media. Keep scrolling for Fowler's best beauty secrets!
BYRDIE: How has your beauty look changed since you first started posting on YouTube and social media?
BLAIR FOWLER: I was only 15 when I started videos, so imagine all of the horrible beauty moments I have that are forever documented! The worst would have to be a super intense purple smoky eye with a bright red lip. Yes, it happened; no, I am not proud. I think I've become more confident in my own skin throughout the years and love to use products to enhance my natural beauty, instead of hiding behind it.
BYRDIE: Has your beauty look been influenced by your followers at all? What are some of the best beauty tips you've learned from them?
BF: Absolutely! I take so many notes from my followers, and they're always very honest with what they think of my look and style that day. They actually taught me not to pump your mascara wand, because it dries out the product and can push bacteria in. I had no idea! Now my mascara lasts way longer!
BYRDIE: What's your favorite popular online beauty trend of the moment? Your least favorite?
BF: Strobing! Omg, I love highlighted, dewy, fresh, skin. I'm not crazy about nude lips that are too nude. I love a good light mauve, but concealer lips blend into your skin too much and wash you out. I'd say make sure there's a big enough pigment difference that you can see where your face stops and lips start.
BYRDIE: Do you have any unique, maybe slightly wacky, beauty habits that none of your followers know about?
BF: I share most of the tips with my viewers, but one of my favorites is to use petroleum jelly to reactivate my mascara and add another coat and freshen up my lashes.
BYRDIE: What are a few beauty products you're obsessed with this summer?
BF: There are so many! I've been loving sheet masks to keep my skin healthy and clear. And eyelash extensions are my new favorite beauty splurge. I look put together even when I'm just waking up! It's fantastic!
BYRDIE: Your hair always looks amazing on YouTube and Instagram. What's your secret?
BF: Thank you! My sister always jokes with me that she got the legs—she's 5'9" and I'm so jealous—but I got the hair. Lately I've been lightening it in the shower using my John Frieda Visibly Brighter Shampoo and Conditioner ($10). It's seriously so easy. You wash and condition your hair just like normal, but you can lighten it up to one shade, and it's been perfect for summer.
BYRDIE: Over the years of posting on social media, have you learned any beauty secrets for looking flawless in selfies?
BF: The lighting is seriously everything. I can take a photo on the same day, two minutes apart, and one is like, "Slay, Queen!" and the other is all, "Delete, delete, DELETE!" It's all based on lighting. I like to use natural light (preferably facing it, not overhead), and I make sure the shadows don't accentuate my under-eye circles.
BYRDIE: What is your ultimate goal as a beauty influencer? Anything exciting in the works?
BF: I love being able to share my life with my online friends. I want to continue doing just that, but next up for me would have to be room tours of my new home and showing how I'm decorating and organizing my new house!
