Your inky black eyeliner pencil is about to have a comeback, if the beauty look at Rag & Bone's Spring 2017 is any indication. The style was all about downtown cool, a signature of the brand's beauty aesthetic, and makeup artist Tom Pecheux explains that the perfectly smudged look isn't as effortless as it appears—but it only takes one easy trick.
Pecheux applied MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder ($17) along the waterline as the base for defined eyes. The pencil glides on effortlessly, but the finish is pearly and matte (aka super cool); but that wasn't the finisher. He followed it up with a layer of the brand's Pro Longwear Fluidline in Blacktrack ($17) on top and tapped it into the skin using his finger to diffuse product onto the lashes for a lived-in look. He tells Vogue that he implemented the same blending technique with wet, waterproof mascara along both lashlines to get pigment onto the roots, locking in the slept-in look. To soften the edges and give it a more casual appearance for the runway, Pecheux used a sooty Eyeshadow in Carbon ($16) on the corners. The smoky-meets-high-pigment look makes a case for bringing back the classic black eyeliner, and then some.
