These 18 Elegant Manicures Prove Black-and-Gold Nails Are Always in Season

Updated 11/28/18

For spring and summer nail colors, our brains go right to pastels and bold brights—rightly so, as those are the warm-weather classics. For this coming winter, we have a different color scheme in mind as it's a little less traditional and a bit more opulent for the season. Now, we're painting our nails a rich and luxurious combination of black and gold. It's a classically chic look that we've been seeing all over Instagram and at the salon, a much-needed change as the temperatures drop and the holidays approach.

Take a scroll through some of our favorite designs, each one different from the last, as we've curated a collection that ranges from ornate and complex to simple and minimalist. Truly, there's something for everyone. Below, find our picks.

These delicate black wire nails are paired with a single studded gold accent nail. They're perfect for people who crave something unexpected and unique (aka the cool girl who is tired of plainly painted nails).

We love the irregular color-blocking between the shiny black and the sparkly gold. It makes for an architectural and modern look. Try using a polish like Ella + Mila Elite Collection in Drippin' Gold ($11).

@ misspopnails

Though this one looks super complicated, all you have to do is paint your nails using a star sticker/stencil, and then outline the shape with mini gold stud accessories, which you can buy at the craft store.

Black-and-gold nails don't have to be ostentatious or bold. They can actually be quite delicate, just like Alicia Torello's "bindi nails" prove. Instead of using black and gold polish, use nude polish and accessorize with stick-on jewels.

@ mpnails

This minimalist design is so chic yet super easy to replicate. Go for a bold black base like Sally Hansen's Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Black Out ($3) before adding a small gold cube at the top of each nail.

This complex mani proves that black and gold can be paired with almost any other color and they'll still look edgy and elegant. Plus, mismatched nails are one of this year's biggest trends.

@ aliciatnails

By now you should have noticed two things. The first is that we love minimal nail designs, and the second is that we love nail accessories. This mani is simple, quick to create, and impactful.

@ aliciatnails

We can't help but to refer to these ones as "tuxedo nails" thanks to the contrasting shapes and polish finishes.

@ theillustratednail

These disco-esque nails were created using a chunky gold OPI polish called Mirror Escape ($8), which is a part of the brand's Alice Through the Looking Glass collection. They're perfect for a Saturday night out, right? They give us Jerry Hall circa 1978 vibes.

@ theillustratednail

Yes, these nails are certainly glamorous, but with gold jewel framing surrounding an inky black center, we'll wear them on literally any occasion.

@ nail_unistella

Here's yet another delicately accessorized nail design from one of our favorite Instagram accounts to follow, @nail_unistella

@nail_unistella

The coolest part about this manicure is all of the barely-there details. There's the gold nail jewel, the contrasting black half-moons, and even pieces of tinsel silver that are almost undetectable unless you zoom in.

@ nailsbybrianalv

We love a good accent nail. Go for all black with a single gold nail on each hand for a more striking effect.

@ nail_unistella

We can't decide if these nails remind us of Mickey Mouse or some dystopian novel we read. Either way, we love the graphic minimalist design.

@ nailbar.kronk

Pair black polish with gold foil that gives a 3D reflective effect for a super-extravagant manicure.

@ mkbauwens

These reverse French tips put a modern spin on an old classic. Even though there's bright gold involved, the finished manicure still manages to look polished and stately.

@ oliveandjune

This one is for anyone who isn't keen on wearing bold black nails. Do as @oliveandjune does and flip the script by wearing a champagne gold base and accenting it with linear white and black details.

@ oliveandjune

This one's good for anyone with super-short nails, since breaking up a plain black base with a vertical point of gold will lengthen the appearance of the nail.
