We put Biolage's Advanced Full Density Thickening Shampoo to the test after receiving a complimentary sample from the brand. Keep reading for our full product review.

Like most women, I couldn’t get over how lush my hair was when I was pregnant. It was shiny, bouncy, thick, and without frizz. As someone with previously shedding strands, it was great not having to constantly pick hairs off my clothes and to see water easily running down my shower drain sans Drano.

Fast forward about a year, and my hair was falling out in clumps. While this is a typical postpartum side effect (and a lot of it was the hair I didn’t lose while I was pregnant), my hair became noticeably thinner, less shiny, and frizzier. All I’ve been able to think for months is, I want my pregnancy hair back.

When I had the opportunity to try Biolage’s Advanced Full Density Thickening Shampoo, I was excited to see if it would deliver on its promise to prevent breakage, remove follicle-clogging impurities, and leave my hair looking and feeling the way it did when I was pregnant.

Ahead—my honest thoughts of Biolage's Advanced Full Density Thickening Shampoo.

Biolage Advanced Full Density Thickening Shampoo

About the brand: Biolage is a pioneering salon brand launched in 1990 that uses botanical ingredients and is recognized as a worldwide leader in the professional hair care field.

About My Hair: Prone to fall-out & dull-looking

I sometimes get frustrated by how my hair looks when it dries naturally (frizzy and dull), and I’ve always lost a lot of hair while brushing or showering. This problem has gotten worse in my postpartum months, and it’s left my hair looking thinner than usual and a little bit lifeless.

The Feel: Thick & foams easily

When I put a little bit of the Biolage Advanced Full Density Thickening Shampoo in the palm of my hand, it felt nice and thick and smelled amazing (more on that later). When I warmed it up between my palms and applied it to my hair, I was impressed by how foamy it got and how easy it was to distribute to my entire head.

Despite its thickness, it washed out easily and I didn’t have to spend any extra time under the shower head getting out extra residue.

The Packaging: Tall & thin

I don’t have any major complaints about the packaging of the shampoo. However, it has a tall, thin design that makes it prone to falling off the side of the tub and straight into it (especially when my 18-month-old finds her way into the bathroom). The packaging also discouraged me from tipping it upside down and depositing the shampoo into my hand that way, which I can imagine will get more annoying as the shampoo runs low—but then again, I can always pull the old “balancing the bottle on its top” trick.

The Scent: Minty fresh

I’m prone to nausea, which means strong smells can set me over the edge easily. While this shampoo does have a strong smell, that smell is mint—which is the one smell that actually helps me feel better when I’m nauseous.

There’s also something very clean and refreshing about the smell, which, in my opinion, is what you want when you’re washing your hair. The smell didn’t linger after I finished washing my hair, but that was fine with me—I don’t need my hair to emit a scent.

Ingredients: Full of good stuff

Biolage’s Advanced Full Density Thickening Shampoo is paraben-free, and it also packs in some great ingredients that make me understand why it worked such magic on my hair. The cocktail includes biotin (which is famous for helping with hair thickness), zinc PCA, and its own gluco-omega blend, which when combined promote healthy, fluffy hair.

The Results: It works magic

While my hair didn’t look as perfect as I'd like when I let it dry naturally, it looked pretty good—wavy and not frizzy at all.

I really, really loved this shampoo and can’t think of one bad thing to say about it.

It also took to my flat iron more easily than usual. When I went to straighten out some of the kinks—they smoothed out easily and quickly, and the result was a shinier, fuller head of hair than I’m used to. Long story short, this shampoo restored the pregnancy hair I’ve been craving, and I’ve been shedding less hair since I started using it. I can’t wait to see what kind of shape my strands are in after a few months of use.

I really, really loved this shampoo and can’t think of one bad thing to say about it.

The Value: Worth it

At $23, this thickening treatment is more expensive than your average drugstore shampoo but also more affordable than some of the high-end shampoos out there. Considering that it was the answer to my postpartum hair prayers, I’d say it’s worth it.

Competition: You've got options

R+Co Dallas Thickening Shampoo ($29): I’ve also tried R+Co’s Dallas Thickening Shampoo. Other than more attractive packaging (I’m a sucker for R+Co’s labels), I liked Biolage’s more. Both use biotin to work their magic, but R+Co’s version is $6 more.

Final Verdict

While the bottle says Biolage’s Advanced Full Density Thickening Shampoo is for thin hair, don’t be fooled: It’s for all hair. If your hair needs any kind of boost, whether you’re dealing with postpartum hair loss or are over a dull, frizzy-haired look, this shampoo will make it appear thicker and shinier.
