What Are the Benefits of a Weighted Blanket?
In addition to helping to lower anxiety, Dr. Blank stays that weighted blankets are even beneficial for individuals with ADHD and autism. They’re also ideal for those suffering from restless legs.
This dovetails nicely with a weighted blanket’s sleep-improving abilities. According to Dr. Breus, first and foremost, lowered anxiety is hugely beneficial in your quest toward being able to fall asleep and stay asleep. But it even goes beyond that.
The technical term for the evenly-distributed weight you get from these types of blankets is ‘"deep pressure stimulation." Dr. Breus cites a study that showed that this type of pressure, from weighted blankets specifically, reduced physiological signs of stress by 33 percent, and that 63 percent of participants reported decreased anxiety. Deep pressure stimulation can help stimulate oxytocin (which is responsible for feelings of attachment and calm) and serotonin (an important precursor for melatonin, an essential hormone for regulating sleep). Simultaneously, it also decreases cortisol (AKA the stress hormone responsible for making you feel crappy).
How to Choose the Right Weight for Your Blanket
“The data suggests that [a weighted blanket] should be approximately 10 percent of your body weight,” says Dr. Breus, though he adds that that’s not necessarily a hard and fast rule. For example, if you weigh 250 pounds, you’d theoretically need a 25-pound blanket, but that’s likely way too heavy and can make it hard to get comfortable, he says. He suggests anyone who weighs more than 100 pounds start with a 12-pound blanket. If you’d like more pressure, gradually work your way up.
