Nordstrom / Blondo

As far as our feet are concerned, there’s nothing we despise more than a pair of soggy shoes—especially if our favorite pair are at risk of ruin. If rain is in the forecast, it doesn’t hurt to keep waterproof shoes in the wings. That way, when the clouds roll in, you’re fully prepared to stomp around in dry, warm, and comfortable shoes.

Keeping your feet dry isn’t just about comfort, though, it’s also about health. “If the feet become wet, toenail fungus and athlete’s foot can easily develop,” says Dr. Bruce Pinker, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon at Progressive Foot Care.

Yet a lot of waterproof shoes aren’t the most breathable or fashion-forward. There’s no point in buying a pair only for it to collect dust in your closet, so using expert advice, we found the best waterproof shoes in durable, comfortable materials and stylish designs.

Ahead, we share our top picks for the best waterproof shoes you’ll actually want to wear.

What to Look for in Waterproof Shoes

“Waterproof shoes should be well-constructed with a proper heel counter, cushioning for support and shock absorption, adequate arch support, and ample room in the toe box to prevent cramping,” says Pinker. The size should also fit well. Pinker recommends a shoe that fits snugly without feeling too tight and has ⅜ of an inch of space between your big toe and the end of the shoe.

Water Resistance

To ensure the shoe can prevent water from soaking through to the foot, you have to look for the right materials.

“One of the best types of waterproof footwear material is Gore-Tex—it is a sturdy and breathable construct that keeps water out,” says Pinker. “While there is a method for waterproofing footwear with the application of a silicone liquid, Gore-Tex is far superior and much longer-lasting.”

Several of the styles on this list are made from Gore-Tex, from Nike Pegasus Trail 3 GORE-TEX to HOKA Anacapa Low Gore-Tex® Waterproof Hiking Shoe.

Besides keeping your feet dry, a good pair of waterproof shoes should stop you from slipping or sliding on wet surfaces. Look for styles that have soles with added traction, like Sorel Out N About Plus Street Waterproof Sneaker, which has a patterned tread to grip slick sidewalks.

  • Are leather shoes waterproof?

Not all leather shoes are waterproof, but it is totally possible to create waterproof leather shoes. “It starts with the leather tanning process, where specific steps are taken to make the leather waterproof,” says Jack Guze, president of Wet Knot Waterproof Boots. “After this process, a ‘membrane’ can be put inside the shoe to ensure water does not get in,” he adds. Goex Bigliana Pointy Toe Pump is an example of a leather style with a breathable, waterproof membrane.

Some shoe companies might take other steps to ensure their designs are waterproof. This includes taping the seams and using special glue to seal everything together. Before buying a leather style, double-check to see if the brand specifies if it’s made to be waterproof.

  • Are waterproof shoes breathable?

As far as breathability is concerned, Guze says there’s a bit of a trade-off. “The more water-resistant, the less breathable,” he explains. With that in mind, Guze recommends determining how you want the shoes to perform, then deciding which ones to get. If you don’t plan on jumping into puddles, go with a pair that is water-resistant rather than waterproof, like Vivaia Pointed-Toe Water Repellent Ballet Flats, as the water-resistant pair will breathe a little easier.

  • Are hiking shoes waterproof?

When it comes to waterproof hiking shoes, Pinker says it depends on the material. “Some hiking shoes can be coated with silicone to become waterproof,” he explains. He recommends looking for shoes made with Gore-Tex, like HOKA Anacapa Low Gore-Tex® Waterproof Hiking Shoe, as it lets your feet breathe while keeping them dry.

Why Trust Byrdie

Contributing writer Jessie Quinn has a bachelor's degree in fashion journalism and has extensive experience working in the fashion closet to interviewing designers at NYLON Magazine. When researching the best waterproof shoes, she considered dozens of styles and narrowed down her list based on function, comfort, and durability. Style is also important, so she gave extra points to the options that boast as much style as they do function. For further knowledge about the importance of waterproof shoes, she interviewed Dr. Bruce Pinker, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon at Progressive Foot Care. She also spoke to Jack Guze, President of Wet Knot Waterproof Boots, about what to look for in waterproof shoes.
