What to Look for in Waterproof Shoes
“Waterproof shoes should be well-constructed with a proper heel counter, cushioning for support and shock absorption, adequate arch support, and ample room in the toe box to prevent cramping,” says Pinker. The size should also fit well. Pinker recommends a shoe that fits snugly without feeling too tight and has ⅜ of an inch of space between your big toe and the end of the shoe.
To ensure the shoe can prevent water from soaking through to the foot, you have to look for the right materials.
“One of the best types of waterproof footwear material is Gore-Tex—it is a sturdy and breathable construct that keeps water out,” says Pinker. “While there is a method for waterproofing footwear with the application of a silicone liquid, Gore-Tex is far superior and much longer lasting.”
Several of the styles on this list are made from Gore-Tex, from Nike Pegasus Trail 3 GORE-TEX to HOKA Anacapa Low Gore-Tex® Waterproof Hiking Shoe.
Besides keeping your feet dry, a good pair of waterproof shoes should stop you from slipping or sliding on wet surfaces. Look for styles that have soles with added traction, like Sorel Out N About Plus Street Waterproof Sneaker, which has a patterned tread to grip slick sidewalks.
Are leather shoes waterproof?
Not all leather shoes are waterproof, but it is totally possible to create waterproof leather shoes. “It starts with the leather tanning process, where specific steps are taken to make the leather waterproof,” says Jack Guze, President of Wet Knot Waterproof Boots. “After this process, a ‘membrane’ can be put inside the shoe to ensure water does not get in,” he adds. Goex Bigliana Pointy Toe Pump is an example of a leather style with a breathable, waterproof membrane.
Some shoe companies might take other steps to ensure their designs are waterproof. This includes taping the seams and using special glue to seal everything together. Before buying a leather style, double-check to see if the brand specifies if it’s made to be waterproof.
Are waterproof shoes breathable?
As far as breathability is concerned, Guze says there’s a bit of a trade-off. “The more water-resistant, the less breathable,” he explains. With that in mind, Guze recommends determining how you want the shoes to perform, then deciding which ones to get. If you don’t plan on jumping into puddles, go with a pair that is water-resistant rather than waterproof, like Vivaia Pointed-Toe Water Repellent Ballet Flats, as the water-resistant pair will breathe a little easier.
Are hiking shoes waterproof?
When it comes to waterproof hiking shoes, Pinker says it depends on the material. “Some hiking shoes can be coated with silicone to become waterproof,” he explains. He recommends looking for shoes made with Gore-Tex, like HOKA Anacapa Low Gore-Tex® Waterproof Hiking Shoe, as it lets your feet breathe while keeping them dry.
