Had a late night and want to look less tired? Or have dark circles that have set up permanent shop beneath your eyes? Either way, if dark circles bother you, you have two options: You can reach for your trusty oversized sunglasses, or you can rifle through your makeup bag in search of concealer.
Concealer can be used to hide everything from blemishes to redness, and although it lives in the shadow of foundation, this concentrated pigment is magical when used under the eyes. So we've been left wondering, which formulas do makeup artists dub "the best" when it comes to under-eye concealers?
After all, these pros spend their days using various formulas in multiple shades and textures, so they know what's up and can advise on which concealers are the best for those pesky under-eye areas. The best part is that a lot of them called out the same products, which makes shopping for this multitasker even easier. It turns out that whether or not you want buildable coverage—from ultra-sheer to full-on—is important to keep in consideration, as is a hydrating non-cakey formula. Because no one wants patchy, dry creases on top of under-eye circles.

Best Overall: Tarte Shape Tape Concealer
It's not the first time you've heard our editors sing the praises of this beloved concealer, nor will it be the last. And we're hardly the only ones fully obsessed with it; one tube of the full-coverage formula is sold every 12 seconds. Surprising? Not in the slightest.
Whether you're looking to hide acne or dark circles, this creamy concealer has got you covered—literally. It blends like a dream, hydrates the skin thanks to the inclusion of shea and mango seed butter, and doubles as a highlighter to bring out all of your best features. What's more, the shade range is truly impressive and one of the best we've seen for a concealer with 30 true-to-skin shades to choose from.
Best Full Coverage: Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer SPF 25
Selfie lovers will want to take a page out of makeup artist Michael Anthony's book, because this compact concealer is way more than a space-saving luxe find. "It has a velvety texture and gives off full coverage, which photographs incredibly natural," he says.
Celebrity makeup artist Quinn Murphy also notes that the coverage is gorgeous. "The colors are great for realistic skin-like colors. It's creamy and easy to apply, which gives good-looking coverage."
Best Full Coverage, Runner-Up: Hourglass Cosmetics Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick
Makeup artists, celebrities, and editors alike adore Hourglass's infamous foundation/concealer hybrid. In fact, when I had a chance to interview Vanessa Hudgens a couple of months ago, she said she pretty much insists makeup artists use it on her to help diffuse any unevenness or problem spots.
"I've actually turned so many makeup artists onto the Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick," she told me. "With almost every makeup artist I've ever worked with, I'm just like, 'Hey, you should use this.' It's just beautiful, and the coverage is amazing." Plus, what's better than a concealer that doubles as foundation and vice versa. We guarantee your glow will be unparalleled post-application.
Best Radiant Finish: Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer
Rita Ora's go-to MUA, Kathy Jeung, is a fan of this cult favorite, pointing out its foolproof usage. "This versatile concealer can give light to heavy coverage depending on how you apply it. Either way, you go, the results are long-lasting without any creasing or dryness," she says.
Makeup artist Kirin Bhatty loves that the name does exactly what it says it will. "It melts into the skin, creating a flawless finish that feels good on the skin; it gives it a soft glow," she says. To up the glow factor, she uses a damp Beautyblender for the application.
What Our Editors & Testers Say
"If you need a full-coverage concealer that feels as light as a feather, Nars' Radiant Creamy Concealer deserves to take up permanent residence in your makeup bag—I'm sure of it. I give two thumbs up to its coverage, consistency, and formula, which makes it a star product in my book." — Ashley Rebecca, Product Tester
"This is a classic for a reason. In my humble opinion, the balance between hydration and pigmentation in this product is unbeatable—often a concealer that provides great coverage does so at a price (namely drying into fine lines in the most unflattering way possible), but this one looks fresh throughout the day. I also love how easy it is to find a shade with a peachy undertone that works for my complexion, cutting the need for color correction." — Eden Stuart, Associate Editor
Best Light Coverage: Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand
If you're the low-maintenance type, you'll love this easy-to-use, dual-ended concealer. Celebrity makeup artist Tina Turnbow says that it is so foolproof, no extra tools are even necessary.
"It never fails to cover without looking cakey. I like the consistency and pigments. I dab it on with the firm brush it comes with, and then I tap it with my fingertips to blend and allow it to sink in." Hay adds that this option is excellent for days when you don't need too heavy of coverage but still want to even out your skin tone. Oh, and the highlighter tip is the quintessential finishing touch to look like you just slept for a full eight hours.
Runner-Up, Best Light Coverage: bareMinerals bareSkin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer
For an under-eye concealer that hides dark circles without creasing or getting into fine lines, try this top-rated concealer from bareMinerals. The concealer comes in six shade options and is infused with lilac plant stems cells and humectants to hydrate the delicate under-eye area while hiding any uneven tones.
Reviewers mention how bareMinerals' concealer is one of the only under-eye concealers they trust to hide dark circles without looking cakey on the skin. It's a great mid-range option for makeup newbies and professionals alike to achieve an even, glowing complexion.
Best Natural: RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up Concealer
Natural makeup has come a long way. The latest formulas on the market are just as good (if not better!) than their non-natural counterparts thanks to solid pigmentation, smooth textures, and high-quality ingredients. If you’re looking for a natural formula, look no further than this award-winning gem from RMS Beauty.
Loved by makeup artists and beauty editors, the creamy concealer is free from parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, and other not-so-great-for-you ingredients. It applies effortlessly under the eyes or on the face leaving a radiant, not-greasy finish. Aside from skin-tone pigments, it’s infused with certified organic coconut oil and castor seed oil to nourish and keep it from caking. It’s also hypoallergenic, gluten-free, cruelty-free, and noncomedogenic.
Best for Fine Lines: IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Anti-Aging Concealer
Sometimes it feels like concealer and fine lines are like oil and water—they just don’t go together. Crepiness, creasing, flaking, all of the things you want hide seem to come to life the second you put on a little bit of cover-up. Good news: You don't have to worry about any of that with hard-working, full-coverage concealer.
This triple threat from IT Cosmetics isn’t your average concealer. The pigmented formula glides on smoothly, instantly brightening the under-eye area without settling into fine lines. It contains powerful ingredients like collagen, peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamins, and antioxidants that simultaneously help to fill in existing marks while also preventing further signs of aging. We suggest dusting it off with a pinch of setting powder to really keep it in place all day.
Best for Dark Circles: Laura Geller Beauty Filter First Luminous Concealer
Celebrity makeup artist Vincent Oquendo recently used this lightweight concealer on me during a master class he hosted for our L.A. edition of Byrdie Beauty Lab. He ultimately applied foundation as well, but he just as easily could have just gone without after applying this magical concealer from Laura Geller. It's just that wonderful and stays true to its filter-inspired name. Oh, and our editorial director, Faith Xue, is also a fan. If you're looking to cover up haunting dark shadows, this one is one of the best, according to Oquendo.
Best for Dark Circles, Runner Up: UOMA Beauty Stay Woke Concealer
Like your beauty sleep in a bottle! This full coverage concealer works well under eyes to brighten dark circles for a flawless complexion. The lightweight formula packs on plenty of pigment, so a little goes a long way when building for a crease-free, dewy finish.
Best for Dryness: Benefit Cosmetics Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer
Hydration is crucial to keeping your eye contour looking and feeling its best, and finding a concealer that provides substantial coverage without drying you out is not always the easiest task. That was the case until Benefit came along with this ultra-moisturizing option that doubles as an under-eye moisturizer and concealer in one.
The stick applicator glides on like silk without pulling or tugging on the thin, vulnerable skin. The unique hydrating halo is infused with vitamin E and apple seed while the core is packed with pigment to conceal darkness. It won't give you intense, full coverage over discoloration, and that’s simply because it’s not supposed to. The result is sheer, lightweight coverage with a whole lot of hydration so your eye area looks bright, natural, and fresh.
Best Shade Range: Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Concealer
Say goodbye to the ghostly flashback that appears in photos when your shade isn't quite right. By now, you know that Fenty has a shade for practically everyone, and this concealer lives up to the hype. It provides medium to full coverage that blends with foundation, and reviewers say that the formula is creamy and buildable.
Best Splurge: Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer
Kevyn Aucoin's versatile concealer is in every makeup artist's kit. Celebrity makeup artist Linda Hay chooses to use this for heavy coverage, and fellow makeup artists Samuel Paul and Tym Shutchai Buacharern agree that a little bit of this pigment-packed concealer goes a long way, making it one of the best under-eye concealers money can buy.
"I love the color range and the coverage this product has," raves Buacharern. "It's a buildable product, so you could go from sheer to full coverage without looking cakey." Samuel's application technique is as follows: "Pat on with the index finger, which helps warm the concealer and melt it into the skin." Buacharern adds, "The warmth from your fingers will give you a smooth finish."
Makeup artist Fabiola notes that this product's color range makes it easy for anyone to find a match, and Kristee Liu says that although she carries many concealers in her kit, she always comes back to this one. "It has the ability to cover everything! It is versatile, blends easily, and stays put all day. I like to use a round, flat brush to apply it, and then I use a wet Beautyblender to press it into the skin."
What Our Testers Say
"What I also love about this product is that it doubles as a concealer and foundation, especially if you’re more of a natural, barely-there makeup wearer." — Khera Alexander, Product Tester
Best Budget: Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Concealer
There's little not to love about this fan-favorite dark circle treatment concealer. It contains good-for-you ingredients like goji berry and haloxyl to help reduce puffiness and shadows. Plus, the featherlight liquid texture glides right onto the skin without sinking into lines or losing opacity as you blend it in.
What truly sets this product apart though is the plush rounded applicator. For one, it’s antimicrobial so you don’t have to worry about it getting gunked up with bacteria and fostering germs that can lead to future breakouts. Secondly, it gives you even coverage without pulling or tugging the delicate eye area, which can lead to wrinkles down the line.
What Our VPs Say
"I've never used under-eye concealer because I could never find one that I liked. This budget option was a desperate drugstore purchase and it has been a miracle worker. It doesn't define my fine lines and wrinkles and it covers up my dark circles without looking like I'm wearing makeup." — Dwyer Frame, VP Commerce
Best Matte Finish: NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer
To strategically hide any darkness under the eyes, residual pigment around the nose, or pesky blemishes, (yes, models get them, too), celebrity makeup artist Tobi Henney loves another epic under-eye concealer from Nars—the brand's Soft Matte Complete Concealer. She likes to apply it with her fingers for extra bendability and precision. "Just tap it on, melt it in, and buff away the edges," told us firsthand during this Lived-In Liner Tutorial.
Best Medium Coverage: Veil Cosmetics Complexion Fix Oil-Free Concealer
Veil Cosmetics calls this a complexion concealer. We call it the answer to erasing the look of pesky dark circles. The formula is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin and the light-enhancing pigments instantly brighten the dark and sallow under-eye area. It’s also a fan favorite for its ability to keep your tired skin covered without looking like you have any makeup on at all.
Best Medium Coverage, Runner-Up: Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Self-Setting Concealer
If "less is more" sounds like your makeup philosophy, look no further than this complement to Make Up For Ever's Ultra HD Foundation. Celebrity makeup artist Colby Smith swears by it. "The great thing about this concealer is that it gives coverage without the thickness. Less is more." Makeup artist Julie Harris agrees: "I love it for under the eyes because they blend well and don't look cakey."
Best Duo: Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer
Two shades might sound intimidating, but hands down, Laura Mercier's cult-favorite formula is one of the best under-eye concealers. Celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff swears by it: "This palette has two shades, so no matter where on your face it's used, it will match impeccably. It also stays put without looking dry." Makeup artist Vincent Oquendo notes that he likes to pair the rich cream formula with a luminous finish foundation for balance.
Makeup artist Vera Steimberg is also a fan of the two-shade combo. "Layering the concealer on top of the neutralizer works really well. I tried it on different people and always works!" Makeup artist Lisa Aharon adds that the consistency of the formula lends versatility. "It's heavy enough to cover spots, bruises, and even tattoos in a pinch. Yet it's light enough to use under the eyes or as a sheer foundation," she says.
Best for Redness: Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer
"If you have redness or shadows, this concealer is the dream because it's incredibly neutralizing," celebrity makeup artist Sir John told us when we asked if he had favorite under-eye concealers for those with sensitive skin. "During this time of year, it's very common to have redness around the eyes and nose from things like broken capillaries—that's when you want to go with a product with cooler undertones. If you're looking to conceal, this is my number one recommendation."
Best Multitasker: Beauty Bakerie Instabake 3 in 1 Concealer
This concealer is perfect for under eye circles due to its rich pigments and concealing properties, but it also does the extra job of smoothing and contouring — making it great for many of your beauty needs. If you're looking for something that is full coverage yet lightweight, this might be the product for you. The brand boasts about it's hero ingredient, cassava, that has strong water-binding properties to prevent that dry, caked on look.
Out of all the concealers on this list, our top pick would have to be the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. A Byrdie-editor favorite (and a cult classic, while we’re at it), this full-coverage concealer will hide it all—acne, dark spots, you name it—while formula blends like a dream. When you need to fake a full night’s sleep, look no further than the UOMA Beauty Stay Woke Concealer, which, as the name suggests, instantly brightens dark circles to make you appear wide awake. We also love that it has a gorgeous dewy finish that never creases. A great concealer shouldn’t have to cost a fortune either, which is why we’re big fans of the Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Concealer. Its featherlight formula is infused with goji berry and haloxyl to reduce puffiness while the plush applicator allows for a smooth, tug-free application.
What to Look for in an Under-Eye Concealer
When it comes to finding the perfect under-eye concealer, Henney recommends first looking into the formula of a product. “Depending on what you want to use it for—whether it’s the for under the eyes, blemishes, or both—it’s important to find a formula that will work for you and your skin needs,” she says. If you’re plagued by puffiness, look for formulas that contain de-puffing ingredients like caffeine. If dark circles are your main concern, look for a concealer with an illuminating finish that’ll help brighten under-eye skin and fake a well-rested look.
Great coverage is a must when it comes to under-eye concealers, especially if you’re trying to mask dark circles. Henney recommends choosing putty-like formulas over ones that are more watery, as they’ll offer higher coverage. “I also love creamy concealer for under the eyes as it blends and wears better on that part of the face,” she adds.
Finally, Henney says to look into a product’s packaging and applicator, making sure it will fit your needs. “Think about if you want a product you can use on the run—for example, a product with a wand that allows for easier application than a pot,” she says. If you’re one to touch up throughout the day, a concealer with a built-in applicator will make reapplying much easier.
How do you apply under eye concealer?
Henney recommends dotting concealer under the eye and blending with either a fluffy makeup brush or the warmth of the fingertips, gently tapping the product into the skin.
Should under eye concealer be a lighter shade than your skin tone?
When searching for the perfect concealer shade, Henney recommends opting for one that’s a few shades lighter than your skin tone. “This will brighten the eye area and make you look more awake,” she says.
How can you avoid creasing?
In order to avoid creasing, Henney recommends setting under eye makeup with a very finely milled translucent setting powder.
