Burning scented candles often gets bundled up with hot chocolate drinking and ice skating as purely a winter pursuit. I can understand why—curling up in front of a log fire under a cashmere blanket whilst the scent of Pomegranate Noir slowly infiltrates every corner of your living room is a bloody poetic image we'd all like to aspire to. But I like to burn scented candles throughout the summer, too, and I'll tell you why. In this sticky heat, scents like fresh laundry can make rooms feel airier, brighter, cleaner… And considering we're yet to instal a beautiful meadow garden in our third-floor inner-city flat, there are even summer scented candles that can replicate the soothing, organic smells of the countryside.
Things are already pretty sweet in the summer—the sun is beaming through the windows, everyone's gearing up for their holidays abroad, and the best summer scented candles just simply add to that chilled ambience. Come round—these are the five scented candles you're likely to find burning in my flat this summer.
I'm not usually a fan of floral-scented candles (they can be a bit powdery) but the sharp, saliva-activating stem of rhubarb adds some welcome acidity to this blend by Jo Malone London. What's more, for each candle sold, the company will donate 75% of the RRP to mental health charities.
Few smells are as joyful as sun lotion. Unwittingly, its slightly floral, slightly medicinal blend sums up the promise of a summer holiday in the sunshine in a single scent so the fact Anya Hindmarch has translated that to a candle is pure genius. An hour burning this can transport you back to that Positano mini break or that Mexican getaway, even when you're stuck at home.
If its carnation, monoi and jasmine blend isn't enough to bring you positive summer vibes, the colourful stickers Cire Trudon's newest candle comes packed with surely will. I'll admit, it took me over an hour to get the positioning of mine just right.
Who doesn't love the smell of fresh laundry hanging out on the line? Even when I lack the energy to even make it to the washing machine, I strike a match, and let this fresh-as-a-daisy candle fake it for me. It's such a delightful smell to greet guests, too.
Like the first swig on a breakfast mimosa, This Works' citrus candle is super refreshing, but with sweet orange and neroli essential oils (both found to be pretty good at hoiking the mind out of the foulest of moods) it has an uplifting affect on the spirit too.
