The Best (and Most Stylish) Shoes For Commuting

Whether you walk, bike, or subway—these should be on your radar.

best shoes for commuting

The idea of commuting anywhere sounds borderline foreign these days, but for those who are slowly spending more time in the office or running out for in-person work meetings, professional attire (in contrast to WFH sweats) is once again a reality. And if you live in a city that requires commuting (by foot, subway, bus, or something in between) then you know the one wardrobe item that’s most important: Comfortable footwear.

While we wish we could have the graceful ease of Carrie Bradshaw running down the street in stilettos, arch support is a very real priority when you’re on the go. Also a priority: Looking cute, which is why knowing which shoe trends can check off both boxes is crucial. Ahead, six styles that do just that.

Ballet Flats

There is never a time a pair of ballet flats won't feel like the right choice. Whether it's a classic rounded-toe silhouette or something more detailed (think embellishments or Mary Jane styles), this shoe style goes with everything from trousers to midi dresses.

Flat Boots

Ankle boots are among the more prized possessions in our wardrobes, but if they've got a high heel, they can be just as uncomfortable as a pair of pumps. Instead, go for a flat version to keep your foot supported and style strong.

Fisherman Sandals

A chunky shoe can look really chic when worn with a printed dress or a sweater and midi skirt pairing. Try a pair of fisherman sandals and slouchy socks for a decidedly cool look to commute around in.

Is there anything more chic than a pair of leather loafers? We think not. Go for a Parisian-inspired look and wear yours with a striped tee and high-waist trousers.

Low Block Heels

If you are determined to wear heels on your commute, the best option is a pair with a low block heel since they allow for more even weight distribution and are lower to the ground.

Some of our favorite street style snaps are those that show women creatively incorporating a pair of sneakers into a non-athletic look. Wear a colorful, bouncy trainer with your favorite dress and jean jacket for a look that's easy to move around in but still feels thoughtful.
