There are some days when you just need your makeup to stay put. Whether it's for a big meeting, a night out, a date, or just a long day of various activities (that don't include touching up your makeup)—we all need a good setting spray to help us keep things in place.
That being said, everyone's skin is different and there are thousands of options out there in terms of products. Each one is made up of ingredients that affect dry skin differently than combination or oily skin. So rather than wade through the many, many formulas on your own, we decided to classify which ones work best for our specific skin types and why. Below, find our favorite setting sprays, listed by skin type.
"Like all of Lindstrom's impressive products, this face mist is crafted with certified-organic, wild-harvested ingredients and not an additive in sight. That's not to mention that its primary ingredient is a complexion workhorse: Jasmine is incredibly hydrating and helps boost skin elasticity, and Lindstrom sources the best of the best. For proof, consider some very famous faces: Makeup artist Katey Denno uses The Jasmine Garden on clients like Amanda Seyfried, Felicity Jones, Mindy Kaling, and the impossibly ageless Connie Britton—and apparently, she can't get the product in fast enough." — Victoria Hoff, wellness editor
"When I'm feeling particularly dry (or my foundation is a bit too matte), I'll use Tatcha's Luminous Dewy Skin Mist to set everything in place and offer a boost of soothing hydration. It's formulated with over 20% botanical oils and humectants as well as red algae and hyaluronic acid. It's amazing to refresh, set, and prevent caking." — Hallie Gould, senior editor
"This new iteration of MAC's classic Prep + Prime Fix+ Spray is infused with pearlescent particles for an ultra-illuminating effect on your skin. Not only does it improve and extend the wear of your makeup for up to 12 hours, but the formula also offers instant and long-term hydration and a glow like no other." — Hallie Gould, senior editor
"This setting spray mists over your skin to keep your makeup from smudging or settling into fine lines for as long as you need it to (or up to 12 hours, whichever comes first). There is technology infused to actually chill the surface of your makeup (yes, really) to keep it looking just-applied for longer, even during sweaty summer nights. It cools, hydrates, and keeps dry skin radiant." — Hallie Gould, senior editor
"It feels cool and tingly, and that is a very welcome change to my bleary-eyed morning routine. I was struck by how smoothly the rest of my makeup went on and how easily I could blend each step. After I finished, I gave another spritz (careful to hold the bottle eight to 10 inches away from my face this time as the directions suggest). It helped my usually tired-looking skin give off a dewy sheen in all the right places and had a really flawless finish. Throughout the day, my skin felt surprisingly hydrated. I use a matte foundation, so that is not something that happens on a daily basis. The aloe vera and vitamin B5 infused in the formula are the reason it keeps you moisturized for hours, and cucumber extract is included to reduce puffiness and add that extra zing each time you spray the product." — Hallie Gould, senior editor
"Best for combination skin, this setting spray offers a super-lightweight, prolonging formula packed with vitamins and minerals—a blend of green tea, chamomile, and cucumber to gently moisturize yet keep shine from your T-zone." — Hallie Gould, senior editor
"The massive hype around this setting spray is so, so real, and you can call me a proud fangirl. This miraculously makes my makeup stay on for hours and hours. When I go out, I wear a full face of makeup so I need a spray with serious staying power. I never leave without spritzing a generous amount of this on top of my makeup before running to catch my Uber. It gives my skin this dewy finish—sans stickiness. It also has a cooling effect that I love. Thanks to this stuff, I don't have to worry about my makeup still looking good when fun nights turn into early mornings." — Maya Allen, assistant editor
"I swear by Make Up For Ever's Mist & Fix Setting Spray. A makeup artist turned me onto this product, which you know means it really works. I have oily skin, and this mist keeps my makeup locked in place all night without turning my face into a greaseball. It's my go-to, and I'll love it until the end of time." — Faith Xue, editorial director
"I don't typically use makeup setting sprays, as I've found a mix of products that stay put without needing any additional insurance, but if I know I'll be at a particular sweaty function (like a wedding or a birthday party), I mist myself with this magic elixir. I first heard about it on YouTube, then picked up a bottle at a beauty expo. It's a silly name, to be sure, but you can jump in a pool with your makeup on after spraying this and still have everything intact—even your perfectly drawn-in brows. It's pretty insane." — Lindsey Metrus, managing editor
This charcoal-infused spray offers continuous oil control for when you know you'll have product on your face all day—and you want it to stay put (and stay matte). It simultaneously treats your skin with a blend of botanical ingredients known for their absorbent properties, while it detoxifies pores and balances your skin's moisture content." — Hallie Gould, senior editor
