Of All the Products We Tried Last Month, These Were the Best

One of the most glorious aspects of being a beauty editor is the number of products we get to take for a test drive. Sure, we'd be lying if we said we weren't constantly surrounded by a mountain of bottles and tubes both in the office and in our apartments, but we approach that mountain eagerly, hiking boots in tow.

Each month, Byrdie editors will be sharing the products within that mountain that stood out the most. Maybe it was a peel that made our skin glow like J.Lo's or a hair mask that brought our dry strands back to life. Whatever it was, we're eager to share it with you so you can experience the same bliss that we did. Take a look at our favorites below.

kat von d true portrait
Kat Von D True Portrait Foundation $36

"This foundation is liquid-to-powder, so it comes out slightly oily-feeling and then 'melts' into a smooth, velvety finish when you apply. It allows you to skip powder, and I'm a fan of any product that cuts steps out of my beauty routine. It gives a really nice, even finish, and you can layer it without veering into cake-y territory. I love that it keeps my combination skin looking smooth and far from oil-slick status by the end of the day."

allsaints leather skies
Allsaints Leather Skies Fragrance $79

"I already count Allsaints Sunset Riot as one of my go-to fall scents, but it's got a new competitor in the form of the brand's latest launch, Leather Skies. Not to sound dramatic, but this is the perfect fall fragrance. It's described as a mix of frankincense, leather, and black sandalwood, but I swear there's a tinge of vanilla or something sweet in there that makes it smell so enticingly cozy. It's officially my new go-to scent for fall 2019."

holifrog wash
Holifrog Superior Omega Nutritive Gel Face Wash $36

"My ideal face wash should not only remove all of my makeup (four layers of mascara notwithstanding) but also leave my skin feeling soft, nourished, and not at all stripped. I had a feeling Holifrog's line of 'washes' would meet each of these requirements given the amount of research put into their formulation and founder Emily Parr's clean ethos, but after my first use, I was still blown away at how nice this offering left my skin feeling, as if tiny workers with cashmere mitts were gently buffing away my makeup, then adding good-for-you benefits back into my skin like apple cider vinegar and sea buckthorn oil. As someone who's trying to make her skincare routine a bit more clean, I'm thrilled that I've found a staple free of toxins and harsh additives."

NuFace Fix
NuFace Fix $149

"I've been vying to try a NuFace microcurrent device for quite some time now, so when the brand's latest launch, a pen-sized line-smoothing product came across my desk, I couldn't test it out fast enough.

"Compared with the original, larger NuFace Trinity which works to tone the face from a holistic level, Fix is a more portable, targeted device that helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles in as little as three minutes. The magic lies in the pulsating currents which help repair and produce collagen deep within the epidermis as well as increase blood circulation to deliver nutrients to the skin.

"After applying the included lightweight balm filled with smoothing active ingredients all over my skin, I run the device along my under-eye area, the outsides of my mouth, and my forehead in upward motions to lift my complexion and minimize signs of skin degradation. The results are instant, and the practice is so soothing that I actually look forward to using it each night to not only rejuvenate my skin, but my mind too."

honest body wash
The Honest Company Eczema Soothing Therapy Body Wash $13

"Body wash and I have a chequered past. After falling into post-shower itching episodes so unbearable I'd have to cancel plans, I eventually discovered I was allergic to sodium lauryl sulfate, and have since switched exclusively to cleaner, more calming blends. One of those is Honest's new Eczema Soothing Therapy Body Wash, a cleanser that harnesses the healing power of colloidal oatmeal to calm inflammation and soften the skin. It's also got a nice lather to it, so for those who need the sensory experience of suds to *feel* clean, you won't be deprived by this offering."

seed phytonutrients conditoner
Seed Phytonutrients Moisture Conditioner $24

"I could really feel the difference after the first wash using this conditioner. My hair felt softer, less weighed down, and overall more 'natural' than it had in months. My hair also stayed smoother for longer which meant my curls we’re popping well past day three. But what’s really special about the product—besides the effect it has on my tresses—is the paper bottle it comes in is made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper! When I reach for it in my shower it makes me feel good—like I’m using a product that is on the cutting edge of sustainable beauty. (Side note, my boyfriend keeps trying to steal it, which isn’t great for me, but speaks to the fact that it works great on different textures as well!)"

Inika Lip Serum
Inika Lip Serum $27

"The sweet orangey scent of this serum really drew me in, and I’ve been applying it religiously for the past month. It gives my lips a glossy yet hydrated feel that is mostly understated but also looks like I'm doing a little something. When I want to turn it up a notch, I’ve also used it over a lipstick, and it helps me achieve that smudgy, just-bitten effect. Pretty sure this is going to be my lip’s go-to once the colder weather hits."

Tata Harper Boosted
Tata Harper Boosted Contouring Serum $295

"I've been on the hunt for a proper anti-aging serum to add to my nighttime routine—one that doesn't contain retinol (I use a chemical exfoliating toner and the two don't mix well) but works to lift, firm, and fill. Tata Harper's Boosted Contouring Serum is every bit as wonderful as the brand claims. The formula is packed with edelweiss stem cells (which lift and sculpt), dabberlocks seaweed (which prevents natural cell degradation), and maize carbohydrates (which supports natural skin elasticity). It makes my skin feel so smooth and buttery when first applied, and even better come morning. I've noticed a real difference in the four weeks I've been using it. Plus, Tata Harper's ingredients are all 100 percent natural with no toxins, fillers, artificial ingredients, synthetics, or GMOs."

Ever Eden Balm
Evereden Multi-Purpose Healing Balm $20

"I'm always here for an 'everything' balm—a protecting, hydrating, thick formula that you can use anytime, anywhere. Such is the case with Evereden's Healing Balm. It treats dry, irritated, or sensitive skin everywhere on your body. Elbows, knees, lips, ankles, heels—anything. It's made with organic rosehip, sunflower seed, and grapeseed oils and is completely natural. In fact, I'm obsessed with the brand's Nourishing Stretch Mark Cream as well. It's less thick, but just as potent and works to smooth marks, scars, and parched skin."

La Prairie Skin Caviar
La Prairie Skin Caviar Eye Lift $485

"I've been using this eye serum for about a month and I'm fully on board. It's expensive, there's no denying that, but when it comes to my under-eye area, I have to bring out the big guns (my under-eyes are consistently puffy, dark, and lines have started to crop up). Its blend of two specific anti-aging formulas—one, the brand's proprietary encapsulated caviar, and the other, a pink gel-cream emulsion—work together to lift, tighten, smooth, lighten, and de-puff all at once. I tap it on morning and night—and I don't see an end in sight."

Gee Beauty
Gee Beauty Liquid Concealer $36

"I don't normally wear any concealer, but this stuff is great. It's easy for a makeup newbie like me because it blends in really nicely and has just enough coverage to even out skin tone without looking like I'm wearing a ton of makeup."

Dr Sturm Face Cream
Dr. Sturm Face Cream $215

"I received a sample of this at an industry event and used the entire tube in a week; it's so hydrating my skin drank it right up. I am weary of thick moisturizers, as they can cause my sensitive acne-prone skin to break out, but not this one. It gave me major hydration and glowing skin all day. It's also packed with an ingredient called purslane which has regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties that help prevent cell aging."

Ernest Pet Probiotic Supplements $18

"Okay, these aren't for me technically, but I think everyone deserves good gut health, including my puppy! She thinks they're treats, so she loves them, too. They've helped keep her regular which I'm grateful for—there's nothing worse than a 3 AM wakeup call from your pup needing to go outside. I give her one every morning when I take my vitamins."

Urban Decay Heavy Metal
Urban Decay Sparkle Out Loud Heavy Metal Glitter Gel in Party Monster $22

"I went to a Euphoria-themed birthday party this month and this came in handy for my eyeshadow look. The glitter gel was so easy to use and had major glitter payoff. I added some extra detail with a glitter eyeliner and the combo made for a dramatic but fun look. Eyeshadow and liner are not my forte, but these were super easy to use."

Rituel de Fille Eye Soot in Cygnus $38

"Two things happened concurrently this month: I ran out of of Lidstar, which is my every-day go-to eyeshadow, and I binge-watched Euphoria, which is a gift from Zendaya and God. Thus, I raided Byrdie's closet for some new bold color and that's how I ended up replacing my near-nude lid routine with this iridescent red and blue glitter. I can't say that Rituel's Eye Soot stays out of my creases forever, but I can say that the resulting sheen is worth a touchup or two through the day. It's been a hit!"

Haus Laboratories
Haus Shimmer Powder in Dynasty $20

"Lady Gaga's Haus Laboratories also answered my imaginary call for color with its Glam Attack Shimmer Powder in Dynasty. This jewel-toned green could have gone one of two ways when paired with my own green eyes, but the pairing actually works, and what's actually most impressive is that this highly pigmented liquid-to-powder formula DOES NOT BUDGE all day long. Need every color."

lorac cashmere
Lorac Diamond Crème Eyeshadow in Cashmere $22

"Realistically, this more subtle glitter shadow from Lorac is the most likely of this bunch to fill the shoes of my empty Lidstar. I love how this shadow pats on with a sheer yet distinct shimmer (that apparently comes from actual diamond dust), and how the Cashmere color picks up on both silver and gold tones. I'm a mixed metal-er."
