The Best Platform Boots

Byrdie / Alli Waataja

There’s no better way to feel badass than throwing on a pair of platform boots. Maybe you fancy the extra boost of height, the shoe’s chunky base, or even the sleek shape, but whatever it is, there’s something to be said about the confidence that this boot style delivers.

Byrdie Researched & Tested

When it comes to our top pick, the AGL Sandy Platform Boots take top honors. They're perfect for everyday wear, can be easily dressed up or down, and they're ultra sleek.

While shopping, it’s important to keep in mind what you plan to wear the boots for. Do you want an everyday pair with subtle detailing and a platform height that will not risk your ankle’s well-being? Or do you want to wear them to dress up an outfit for an event, opting for a precarious platform and embellished accents? The factors to consider can seem endless.

What to Look for in Platform Boots

Platform Height

As expected, the platform height is one of the most important things to consider. To Martinez, it’s important to realize that “there is a big variance in how tall the platform is. Technically a platform boot can range anywhere between 1”, which most of us would consider a standard or relatively low heel height, to 6”! You might love a style with a 2.5” platform but at 4” you might not want the extra height, so I would always double check the product details.”

Material

From patent leather to suede to shearling, think about the construction of the shoe. If you intend to wear the platform boot in harsher conditions, then you may want to opt for a pair that can defend itself. The rubber soles are also great for more casual wearing, so consider the material of the sole as well.

Design Details

Look closely at the boot. There may be a little logo, a shearling lining, or a simple design on the laces that make it either more or less appealing. It’s also important to be sure that the platforms are well crafted and sturdy, while giving you enough support.

Fit and Comfort

Be sure that you can actually walk in your boots. The extra height is great and all, but if you can’t move then you can’t go where anyone will actually see it. Martinez finds that one easy way to check for fit and comfort is to “Read the reviews! Other customers often give great feedback regarding the fit that is worthwhile before placing an order.” We agree, and Hansford adds that she can “work and move furniture in platform shoes.” The shoe should feel like an extension of self.

FAQ
  • How do I style platform boots?

We turned to the experts on this one. For Martinez, platform boots are “a bit more fun and eye-catching so [she styles] them accordingly. You can never go wrong with a great pair of jeans, [don’t be] afraid to style them with a shorter skirt or dress!” Hansford in particular is a fan of wearing them “with oversized, baggy pants.”

  • Is it hard to walk in platform boots?

Martinez chimes in on this one, saying that “it really depends on the outsole. For lightweight platform outsoles that are 3” or lower, [she thinks] it is just as easy as walking with non-platform boots or sneakers. This is where the customer reviews and product details are really helpful to read. With that being said, a general rule of thumb is that the higher you go the more effort you need to put into walking.”

  • Are platform boots a trend or a fad?

Neither expert thinks platform boots are going anywhere anytime soon. Martinez comments, “Who doesn’t like to add a few inches to their height every now and then!? [She] would be surprised if platform boots aren’t popular 100 years from now!” Hansford agrees, “Platforms are a lifestyle, haha! Once you go tall, you never go back down.” We back both of them on this.
