These Are the Best New Beauty Products We Tried in September

Updated 10/30/17

One of the most glorious aspects of being a beauty editor is the number of products we get to take for a test drive. Sure, we'd be lying if we said we weren't constantly surrounded by a mountain of bottles and tubes both in the office and our apartments, but we approach that mountain eagerly, hiking boots in tow.

Each month, Byrdie editors will be sharing the products within that mountain that stood out the most. Maybe it was a peel that made our skin glow like J.Lo's or a hair mask that brought our dry strands back to life. Whatever it is, we're eager to share it with you so you can experience the same new-product bliss that we did.

Take a look at our favorites below.

Brow Power Pomade
It Cosmetics Brow Power Pomade $24

"I consider myself a pretty 'chill' person, but I'm so damn meticulous about my brows. If I don't give them a quick clean-up every morning, I feel like I've lost it, and my day is doomed. I'm crazy about my favorite brow products, and I rarely try new things. But I decided to give this a whirl one morning when I was feeling adventurous and was pleasantly surprised. After applying my brow pencil, I brushed this clear gel through my hairs in both directions for extra definition. The sheen it leaves is nice, but it truly passed my test when my brows didn't feel all hard and gross an hour later from the gel. I'm into this stuff."

Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation 160 1.08 oz/ 32 mL
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation $35

"Call me a hypebeast if you want, but this foundation is everything. I was a little nervous because the first time I tried this foundation was on camera for Byrdie's Instagram Stories. I completed Sephora's awesome shade-match test and trusted that it matched my skin tone. Rihanna created 40 foundation shades with all women in mind, so I knew my girlfriend had me covered—and I was right. Shade 420 melted right on top of my skin so seamlessly and literally made my face look airbrushed. I love its matte texture because it stayed all day (who has time to worry about touching up their foundation?), and it perfectly covered my dark spots."

Instant Texture Mist 1.7 oz/ 50 mL
Living Proof Texture Mist $26

"I recently cut my hair into an Olivia Munn–inspired lob and thus have had to style my hair completely differently. I aim for tousled beachy waves, but oftentimes, they just fall flat, so I've been desperately searching for a good texturizer to give my roots some life. This new spray from Living Proof totally did the trick by depositing just the right amount of grit for sexy texture. I also love that it comes in pump form so I'm not further contributing to the hole in the ozone layer."

Femmue Ideal Oil $58

"Natural skincare and Korean skincare comprise 90% of my routine, so when I got my hands on Femmue, a new natural Korean skincare brand, I was like a kid in a candy store. The line is composed of a bouncy clay mask, a flower-infused mask, an oil, a vitamin C serum, and a cleansing balm. They're all divine, but my favorite is this oil, a lightweight, dreamy formula that gives my skin a plump, healthy glow almost instantly. I love putting it on underneath my foundation or even mixing it in with my makeup for a bit more radiance."

Vanish™ Seamless Finish Foundation Stick Walnut 0.25 oz
Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick $46

"While I'm always up for trying new lipsticks and mascaras (the latter because I still haven't pinned down my all-time favorite), one beauty product I very seldom switch up is my foundation. I've been very faithful to my go-to liquid foundation since a makeup artist introduced me to it a few years ago. But earlier this month, I stopped by the Hourglass flagship in Venice to take a look at the brand's holiday collection, and while I was there, I picked up a couple of Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Sticks ($46). I'm not exaggerating when I say it's been a total game changer for my beauty routine.

"I don't think I've touched a foundation stick since high school (when I was still learning the ropes of makeup application and had a few more pimples to conceal). Yet Hourglass's take isn't just for hiding bumps and blemishes—it blends into the skin for full coverage that doesn't look covered up. Instead, the skin is left with a smooth finish that seamlessly evens out the complexion, without the look of makeup. When I wear it, I continually receive compliments for how good my skin looks, not my makeup. I apply just one to two swipes of the stick (it glides on like a liquid foundation) on my cheeks and forehead and one down the bridge of my nose, then blend with the Hourglass Vanish Foundation Brush for a weightless, essentially 'invisible' finish. You don't see the product; it just looks like you have really good skin."

Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier
SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier $100

"To be quite honest, I'd try anything with a SkinCeuticals label on it—I'm that much of a devotee. After many, many of my beloved CE Ferulic bottles used until the very last drop, it's no surprise the brand's newest serum has become one my favorites. It's meant to amplify your skin's hydration levels as well as improving firmness, smoothness, and plumpness. I use it after cleansing, toning, and applying any treatment serums for an added boost to my skin. It's pretty shocking how instantly you notice a difference—my skin immediately looks more supple and bouncy. I even apply it throughout the day for a hydration pick-me-up."

Gel Balm Cleanser 3.2 oz/ 100 mL
Eve Lom Gel Balm Cleanser $60

"Meant for the non-morning type (like myself), this iteration of Eve Lom's cult-favorite cleansing balm works just as well in half the time. Instead of digging into a big jar of balm and massaging the formula on with a muslin cloth (which is lovely when you have the time, but tedious when you're late for a meeting), I just use one pump of the essential oil–and–shea butter blend (including clove, eucalyptus, hops, and chamomile oil) and am out the door."

Immortelle Divine Youth Oil
L'Occitane Immortelle Divine Youth Oil $100

"I discovered this facial oil at an event and haven't stop patting it over my makeup ever since. Sure, it's meant to use as part of your skincare routine (to lock in all the serums, moisture, and good ingredients), but instead, I like to use it on top of my makeup to add glow and dewiness that isn't otherwise easy to achieve. The formula houses a complex of seven natural plant oils with a high concentration of essential fatty acids but it's unbelievably lightweight and silky. I just pat it on top of my foundation, and I glow all day."

W3ll People Bio Booster Serum $29

"It's no secret that facial oils are having a moment right now, and though I love the idea of an oil-based serum, I typically find them to be too greasy or sticky to regularly incorporate into my skincare routine. But for some reason, this new serum from organic skincare line W3ll People is the exception. My skin is prone to redness and breakouts, and the formula has been a saving grace these past few weeks. Formulated with ingredients like vitamin E, turmeric, black cumin, broccoli, red raspberry, carrot, and non-comedogenic oils like jojoba and calendula, it basically feels like I'm feeding my skin with my favorite Roots 1 concoction from Pressed, and my skin has been eating it up. I mix it with a few drops of my vitamin C essence each night, and together, the brightening benefits have been pretty significant. I'm obsessed."

Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter Gradient Glow
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter Gradient Glow $N/A

"I recently depleted the last of my bronzer stash, so when Becca's newest pressed highlighter came across my desk, I was (cautiously) excited. To be honest, I'm a little bit of a bronzer snob, and I have stayed true to my OG pressed formula for over three years. However, the second I opened up the compact, I was admittedly enamored. As the name suggests, the highlighter features a pretty (and very flattering) gradient of the brand's cult-favorite shades (opal, moonstone, rose gold, topaz, and bronzed amber). I've tried other multi-hued product and have been met with a muddy complexion, but this highlighter yielded the opposite effect. Slightly shimmering, the mix of colors makes the transition from summer to fall more bearable and gives my skin a touch of color and luminosity without being over the top. I plan on using it religiously until I reach the bottom of the compact."
