You probably pay quite a bit of attention to what you put in your hair in the shower—with shampoos and conditioners formulated specifically for your hair type. But how much have you thought about the towel you use to wrap your hair in once you step out of the tub? It turns out the type of towel you use can have a major impact on the health and appearance of your strands.

“Hair is weak when wet and prone to damage and breakage,” says celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger. “Hair that is chemically bleached, dry, or damaged gets weak even faster and is most prone to damage.” Hershberger explains that removing water quickly post-shower will help your hair regain strength and prep it for styling.

What, exactly, should you dry your hair with, though? In general, hairstylists recommend you skip grabbing the cotton towel and reach for a microfiber towel instead. Microfiber towels wick water out of hair quickly and more thoroughly than cotton towels, says Hershberger. This keeps hair healthy and reduces frizz, adds celebrity hairstylist Mia Santiago.

As for how to use a microfiber towel, Santiago recommends wrapping one around your head tightly and leaving it on for at least 10 minutes before applying products. Looking to rock your natural texture vs. blow-dry your hair smooth? “Hair will dry faster and retain its natural curl pattern should you choose to diffuse it,” Santiago notes.

Here, we’ve rounded up the best microfiber hair towels to make styling your hair a whole lot easier.
