We Tried Tons of Makeup Products in August, and These 13 Were the Best

Updated 04/18/19

We get really excited this time of the month, pausing to reflect on the best products we've tried in the past 30 days (which is both incredibly fun and incredibly difficult). But we have a fun surprise up our sleeves: Whereas before we dedicated one lone "best-of" post to every kind of beauty product—from hair products to makeup to skincare—we've decided to split up our favorite categories each month to provide specific insight into what we've been loving, trying, and recommending to everyone we know.

And right here, right now, we're talking makeup. Behold the 13 best makeup products Team Byrdie tried and quickly fell head over heels for during the month of August. (Oh, and they just might be some of our favorites thus far in 2018.) Keep scrolling for the lipsticks, luminizers, and foundations we couldn't stop swiping.

Nars Climax Mascara $24

"Beyond the sexual-looking tube (is it butt plug–inspired? I'll always wonder), I was immediately attracted to the Nars Climax mascara for the thick, fluffy brush. I know my lashes, and my lashes love this type of brush. Sure enough, after I curled my lashes and swiped the formula through, I was happy to see instant volume after just one coat. But one is never enough, so I kept applying and applying and applying. This stuff does not clump, no matter how many layers you apply. I probably applied about 10 layers before my arm got tired, and still, my lashes looked nice and airy and not at all spidery-looking."

Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Hydrating Foundation $36

"Smashbox just added new shades to its Studio Skin Foundation, and it's one of my new faves. The gel formula is perfect for transitioning from summer to fall, and I liked that the final effect blurred out my pores and any discoloration but didn't end up looking greasy by midday. It's marketed as medium-to-full coverage, but I prefer a lighter finish and was pleasantly surprised at how breathable the formula felt."

Shiseido Aura Dew Face, Eyes, Lip in Cosmic $25

"Shiseido recently came out with a new makeup collection that has incredible shades and textures. I love this powder-cream hybrid product, which I apply directly to my eyelids with my fingers. It gives a pretty shimmer without looking like full-on shimmer, and it's become my version of daytime eye shadow. If I'm feeling more dramatic, I'll blend it above my cheekbones as a highlighter, too."

Burberry Lip Velvet Crush in Copper Pink $30

"The sponge-tipped applicator of this lip product makes it addicting to apply, but it's really the texture that makes me want to use it all the time. It's airy and light, and the shade Copper Pink adds the subtlest pink flush to your lips—like your lip color but better. The finish is velvety but not drying, and it's now one of my summer lip staples."

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Glow $38

"A luminous, allover glow is always my vibe, but my combination skin sometimes translates that into an oil-slick. That's why I love Laura Mercier's new Translucent Loose Setting Powder Glow ($38). It helps keep shine at bay while also giving off a pretty sheen from the infused pearl pigments. I've been a faithful user of the original powder for years, so I knew I'd be equally as impressed by the new formula. It also comes with a curved brush that hugs the contours of the face for perfect application."

RMS Living Luminizer Multeyetasker $22

"I'm obsessed with RMS's Living Luminizer because, well, it's the best damn highlighter out there, IMO. It has an all-natural, coconut base, melts into your skin, and offers a glow like no other. So naturally, I fell in love with the brand's newest launch, the Living Luminizer Multeyetasker. It's the same glowy, perfect highlighter, only wrapped up in pen form. I use it on the inner corners of my eyes, Cupid's bow, and waterline for the most ethereal result."

Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Full Coverage Foundation $38

"I'm always reticent to try something full-coverage, especially when it's matte. I just usually go for a dewier, more natural look and fear my face makeup will look caked on and gross otherwise. However, this new foundation is different. It offers an unbelievable, breathable, airbrushed-looking finish in just a few pats."

Cle De Peau Beaute Radiant Corrector For Eyes
Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Corrector For Eyes $65

"My approach to makeup is feast or famine; either completely made up or without a stitch save for a cursory crimp from an eyelash curler. Odd, perhaps, but it's just the way I like to do things, and the three-minute look just isn't my vibe. However, my perpetual dark circles are the death of me (no really, it looks like I've been resurrected), and if there were a natural-looking makeup product that could diffuse them even on my non-makeup days, you can bet I'd be wearing it. And finally, I've found it.

Seriously, this radiantly creamy new under-eye concealer is one of the best I've ever tried. It melts into the skin seamlessly, barely creases (even without powder), and expertly camouflages even the most decrepit-looking shadows. I can't stop talking about it, and this review proves it. (I mean, just look at the difference between my right and left under-eyes!)"

Kora Organics Crystal Luminizer in Rose Quartz $28

"So this was actually really difficult because Kora just released two even newer shades of this coveted, crystal-infused luminizer in clear and amethyst. (Both are so breathtaking your stomach just might drop through the floor.) That being said, I have a special place in my heart for anything that makes me look as if I've been kissed by a cherub. Therefore, the OG formula in Rose Quartz remains my cheeky soulmate. The hint of pink is so subtle and flattering, and it never fails to breath new life into my complexion even on days when it's looking sinisterly dull.

Plus, the formula is pristinely natural and clean, composed of oils like rose hip, coconut, and jojoba, expertly accented with rose quartz powder and noni fruit extract."

Benefit Cosmetics Brow Contour Pro $34

"Benefit always comes through when it comes to brows. I was obviously hype to try this new product considering I'm a fan of its original pencil. I love a bold brow look and am not shy about the fact that my brow routine is the most extra. I've been traveling a lot lately and realized I always forget my concealer or angled brush that I used to highlight my brows because, well, too many things! This all-in-one pencil is a dream because I can literally fill in, contour, and shape my brows with one thing.

So genius. I'm honestly kind of salty I didn't think of this first. Big ups to Benefit for creating my latest holy-grail brow product."

Flesh Touch Flesh Highlighting Balm in Squeeze $18

"Recently, I spoke on an amazing beauty and wellness panel, and the brand dubbed me a 'glow expert.' I think I'm going to take that title and run with it because why wouldn't I? Plus, highlighters are my second favorite makeup product after lipstick, so I'm happy my glow-inducing makeup aesthetic is easy to spot. I chase a good glow whenever—all day, every day. Byrdie's managing editor, Lindsey, handed me this chocolate glow stick because she mentioned it'd probably look so good on my skin tone.

She was so right. I usually stick to champagne shades that pop against my dark complexion, but this creamy balm matches my skin tone perfectly so it gives me a lit-from-within glow that I love. It also feels super hydrating and works well on top of my foundation. So don't be afraid to layer this!"

Becca Skin Love Glow Glaze Stick $28

"When it comes to highlighter, I basically just wanna look like a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Dewey and slick. No sparkles, no glitter. So Becca’s new glaze stick is the perfect fit for me. I simply swirl my fingers in the hydrating cream formula (which is loaded with nourishing plant ingredients like ginger and avocado) and tap it all over my face and décolleté for that glowy, youthful, fresh-skin look I'm obsessed with."

Too Faced Tutti Frutti Pineapple Paradise Strobing Bronzer Highlighting Duo $30

"I'd been kinda bored with my bronzers for months until Too Faced's Pineapple Paradise bronze/highlight duo entered my life. The vegan and cruelty-free powder smells like actual pineapple, is silky smooth, and when mixed together gives my face a warm and shimmery glow without looking sparkly or fake. I can see myself using this all year long."

Next up: We tried dozens of skincare products this month, but these were our 14 favorites.
