Behold: The Best Haircare Products We Tried This Month

Updated 08/28/18

Hair is always a topic of discussion in the infamous #ByrdieChat. As editors, we're constantly switching up what we use on our strands. Name any hair beauty dare, and we've probably tried it. When the seasons change, so do our products. Summer is probably the toughest on our strands. Dealing with the thick heat and humidity is not a game. Sadly, this season is almost over, so we're soaking up every last bit of summer we have left.

Wondering what we've relied on to beat this summer's heat? Ahead are the best hair products we've tried in August.

Project Sukuroi(TM) Golden Smoothing Balm 3.5 oz/ 100 g
O & M Project Sukuroi Golden Smoothing Balm $50

"I recently got a blowout at the O&M salon in New York's meatpacking district and couldn't believe how soft my hair felt afterward. My favorite product I've since been using every time after showering is this luxurious golden smoothing balm. It's made from something called camellia oil, as well as keratin and macadamia oil. I add the tiniest bit to my hair as it air dries, and it makes my normally dry strands feel super soft and healthy. Once this month in a fit of desperation, I added it to dry ends and was pleasantly surprised to see it didn't weigh my hair down."

Super Stretch Coconut Curl Elongator
DevaCurl Super Stretch Coconut Curl Elongator $30

"I am obsessed with this product. My curl pattern can be hard to characterize—some days, based on the humidity, the products I use, or my mood, my curls will be huge, '70s-style puffy and less defined. Other days, they'll air-dry really coiled up and tight. Most times, though, it's somewhere in-between. I've come to love the variation, playing them up with they're big and so on. Recently, I've been wanting my hair to look longer without sacrificing the look of my curls. Enter DevaCurl Super Stretch Coconut Curl Elongator, seemingly the answer to my prayers. It's a coconut-infused cream that stretches and elongates curls without compromising definition (and adding shine and moisture courtesy of the coconut oil). My curls are longer looking, nourished, and smell like vacation. I'm sold."

Volumizing Spray
Sisley Volumizing Spray $90

"I have very fine hair that falls totally flat on its own but I got a blowout recently using Sisley’s new volumizing texture spray and damn does it make a difference. You apply the spray to wet hair (or dry, actually) at the roots, then blow it dry. It's not so heavy and thick that it weighs down your hair or makes it feel gunky, but it provides so much body, texture, and hold, thanks to ingredients like Boswellia gum, which coats the hair and provides support for that lifted effect, and a high-impact volumizing resin."

Kristin Ess Purple Shampoo $12

"I was on the market for a new purple shampoo, and Kristen Ess's affordable option makes me wonder why I ever spent more than $12 on the stuff. It smells delicious—not headache-inducing like most brightening formulas. And it's really, really purple, so it'll tone your brassiness in only one wash (just be careful not to leave it in too long or you'll come out with a purple tint)."

Virtue Refresh Dry Shampoo $32

"I've tried a lot of dry shampoos in my life, but this is by far one of the best. Not only is lightweight, invisible, and divinely scented (a co-worker actually stopped me in the bathroom to ask what it was), it boasts longterm scalp and strand benefits as well. It's one of the few formulas I've tried that doesn't make my roots feel itchy and cakey with residue, and since it's infused with the brand's trademark Alpha Keratin 60ku (which mirrors the actual keratin in human hair, skin, and nails), it strategically adheres to damage for ultimate repair. Basically, it's the most high-tech dry shampoo you'll ever lay hands on."

Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo $28

"I've been devoutly obsessed with Olaplex for years, so when I found out the brand was debuting shampoo and conditioner, you can only imagine my excitement. Of course, with such lofty hopes and dreams also comes the chance for disappointment, but alas, this duo only exceeded my expectations. Just like the OG No. 3 leave-in treatment, both the conditioner and shampoo smell amazing (though they smell a teensy bit different from No. 3) and post-wash, strands are left strong, soft, and not at all tangly. I've been using the couple to wash out the No.3 and in my mind, they passed the ultimate test: combing hair when its wet with literally zero fallout."

Protect & Prevent Spray 1.7 oz/ 50 mL
Moroccanoil Protect & Prevent Spray $13

"After using the same leave-in protector and detangler for years, I've been in the market for a new one for months now. And frustratingly, I was having trouble finding something that I loved. Until, that is, celebrity colorist Lorri Goddard introduced me to one of Morocanoil's newest debuts, the Protect & Prevent Spray. It has the quintessential Moroccanoil smell (which I've always had a thing for), it helps condition and detangle, and most importantly (especially if you're a blonde like me), it acts as a shield against environmental stressors that can lead to brassiness and unwanted tinges to color-treated hair."

Best Summer Haircare Products
Mask No.1: L'hydration
David Mallett Mask No.1: L'hydration $75

"This mask is the perfect hydrating treatment for my dry, brittle (not to mention splitting) ends. I smooth it all over my hair about 20 minutes before I shampoo. When I step out of the shower, my hair feels significantly smoother and healthier. Like the Coco & Eve Super Nourishing Coconut & Fig Masque ($50), it's become my haircare go-to."

Shhh Silk Pillowcases $149

"I've never slept on anything but a cotton pillowcase, but ever since trying these 100% silk ones, I'm hooked. I wake up with smooth tangle-free hair, which makes subsequent styling much easier. They're also more gentle on my skin, which makes them the perfect addition to an age prevention skincare routine."

Balmyard Beauty Siren Luster Hair Oil $64

"I'm a softie for chic packaging. If it looks pretty on my desk, I'm going to want to try it. This golden bottle not only looks gorgeous but also makes my hair look gorgeous. I have textured hair and one of my biggest concerns is dryness—it's a constant struggle all curly girls can relate to. This oil smells like a legitimate garden, probably because it's infused with natural ingredients like tropic coconut oil, Jamaican black castor oil, and blackseed oil. I squeeze out a bit on my fingertips and run it through my strands. It leaves a subtle yet noticeable shine on my hair without weighing it down."

The Mane Choice Manetabolism Go! $36

"My lust for long hair is alive and thriving. I'm pretty much down to try any safe alternative that promises radical hair growth. One of my all-time favorite textured hair lines, The Mane Choice, is known for its best-selling hair growth supplements. With the success of the brand's cult hair growth vitamins, the formula expanded to include these dietary supplements. I admittedly don't have the discipline to take pills every single day, so mixing this packet in my water feels so much easier. After a few weeks, I've noticed a major difference with new growth. This stuff is no joke."

Wave Maker Touchable Texture Whip
DevaCurl Wave Maker Touchable Texture Whip $26

"I know I know, I'm late to the game. This oldie but goody has been around for a while, and I'm finally catching wind of its wondrous wave-making magic. I'm wearing textured extensions right now, and I switch between straight and curly styles. After wetting my hair, I squeeze out a bit of this creamy formula and lather it all over my damp hair. After it dries, I have the beachy, effortless curls I've always sought after. "

Creme of Nature Pure Honey Moisture Infusion Edge Control $6

"Edge control is an absolute must for me. In the summer's heat, my baby hairs curl up like crazy, so I'm always in need of smoothing pomades that'll give me sleekness in seconds. The issue with some edge controls is they'll make my hair feel all dry and sticky. Gross. This is blended with natural ingredients, like pure honey, so it moisturizes and smoothes my hair at the same time. Genius."
