With Halloween coming up fast, we know all makeup lovers are going to go all out on their looks. We're already picturing the bright, vivid colors and the sparkling glitter that will flood our Instagram feeds and make us double tap that pic. But with big beauty looks comes big responsibility; even those products that claim they will stay on for a certain number of hours still need to be reinforced with something. Plus, nothing ruins a look like unintentional smeared lipstick or runny eyeliner. That's where a setting spray comes in handy.
Setting sprays are supposed to lock makeup in place and freshen up your look. We asked makeup artists which drugstore setting sprays (because we're always down for things that are wallet-friendly) they like to use.

"My absolute favorite drugstore setting spray is the NYX Professional Makeup Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray Matte Finish. This lightweight matte spray is just as good as any designer brand and keeps makeup on point all day," says Kelli J. Bartlett, Glamsquad director of artistry.
"The Milani Make it Last setting spray is a top pick for me. It can be used before and/or after makeup application or on its own to give you a nice matte finish! And $10 makes it a steal for me," says Stephany Andujar, MSA model and makeup artist.
"My two favorite drugstore setting sprays are the NYX matte and NYX dewy finish. I have been alternating the use of both products for oily to combination and normal skin types. It sprays on the skin evenly, allowing even coverage. My brides in particular have sent me photos and positive feedback about the longevity of their makeup throughout their wedding day," says Kristine Cruz, makeup artist at Antonio Prieto Salon.
"Avene's Thermal Spring Water works wonderfully as a setting spray. I love that it has so many uses. It soothes and softens the face prior to makeup application, sets the makeup, and rehydrates the skin after removal. If I'm doing a makeup change on set or taking mine from day to night, a light mist of the spray allows me to rework the look without making the skin look cakey. Personally, I keep a bottle in my fridge year-round to either cool down in the summer or to boost my moisturizer in the dry winter," says celebrity makeup artist Lisa Aharon.
“I love using it because it not only is great to hydrate skin before applying skincare it’s also great for setting makeup as well to keep it in place while looking hydrated," says Kira Nasrat, makeup artist.
"My favorite drugstore setting spray is L'Oréal Infallible Pro Spray and Makeup setter. In my experience, this product is right up there with the best of them! I have set my brides, celeb clients, and myself with this long-wear spray. It gives a beautiful, fresh makeup look while lasting all day. I love this right after powder to give that pretty sheen to the skin and take away the powdery"look. If you're looking for a lightweight, oil-free, affordable product that will keep your makeup on all day, this is for you," says Elena Miglino, Smith & Cult beauty ambassador.
"For a drugstore setting spray, I love the Pixi by Petra Makeup Finishing Spray. After I finish with my clients' makeup, I do a light mist of this spray to ensure that everything stays in place and looking fresh all day long, especially on those hot summer days. As an added bonus I also use this spray for oily skin clients as a primer before makeup," says Kerrie Urban, makeup artist.
"I think a setting spray is essential to the makeup process—it's a great way to make makeup last but also to refresh throughout the day. I especially like Mario Badescu facial spray with aloe herbs and rose because it doesn’t only take makeup lasting into consideration but also skincare. I love glowing skin, and by putting hydration back into the skin on top of makeup. Your complexion will feel and look hydrated," says Kirin Bhatty, celebrity makeup artist.
