Our love for eyebrows is no secret. Some of us are blessed with flawlessly full arches, others need a little support, and some were blessed with great brows but plucked most of them off in the early aughts. In any case, most people can benefit from a brow gel. Whether you have sparse hairs and need something to fill in the gaps, want a little more fullness, or are looking to shape your arches, eyebrow gels can do wonders. They're easy to use too.
For volume, dimension, and that sought-after shape, these are the best brow gels on the market.
Best Overall: Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel
Anastasia Beverly Hills is the reigning queen of eyebrow products. Dip Brow Pomade has long been a favorite among beauty enthusiasts, but carrying around the little pot and an applicator brush isn't always convenient. Enter: Tinted Brow Gel.
It's everything we love about the brand's pomade but in a handy little tube with a tiny spoolie brush. Thanks to its botanical formula, this fuss-free product fills in your brows with natural color, defines your arches, and delivers all-day control without flaking.
"When applying colored brow gel, wipe off the access gel, and start the application where there is the most hair, brushing up and out toward the outer tip of the brows. After brushing outward, take the rest of the gel and comb little upward strokes into the inner corner of the brow, then again through the brow to the outer tip. This way, you don't get the brow gel on the skin with the first few strokes," New York-based makeup artist Christine Cherbonnier says.
Best Budget: e.l.f. Cosmetics Wow Brow Gel
With e.l.f.'s Wow Brow, you can have fuller eyebrows for only a few bucks. The wax-gel formula is infused with pigmented hair-like fibers, which effortlessly cling to your brows for more voluminous yet natural-looking arches.
Best Drugstore: Rimmel London Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel
Brow This Way allows you to achieve professional-level arches at drugstore prices. The lightweight gel formula tames haywire hairs, fills in the blanks, and delivers impressive definition. Swipe it on using itty-bitty strokes and marvel at your perfectly groomed, natural-looking brows.
Best K-Beauty: Etude House Tint My Brows Gel
Korean beauty brands have gained a lot of attention in the U.S. for their incredible skincare offerings. If you haven't expanded your horizons into the world of K-beauty makeup, this brow gel by Etude House is a great place to start.
While each of the five shades provides substantial pigment, the lightweight formula delivers a natural look. The fine-point brush makes it easy to create hair-like strokes, and you can count on an all-day tint.
Best Hold: Urban Decay Brow Finish Waterproof Brow Gel
Urban Decay is known for long-wear makeup, and Brow Finish is no exception. The clear waterproof gel glides on effortlessly and can be worn on its own or over other eyebrow products. It's easy to shape and set your hair using the angled spoolie brush, and your look will stay in place for up to 16 hours.
Best Waterproof: Wunder2 Wunderbrow Waterproof Eyebrow Gel
If your makeup tends to smudge from sweat, humidity, rain, or other moisture throughout the day, Wunderbrow is your new best friend. This award-winning waterproof brow gel is smudge-proof and transfer-proof.
It's formulated with hair-like fibers to fill in and sculpt your brows and lasts for an astonishing three whole days. In other words, it'll come off only when you're ready to take it off.
Best Shaping: Bobbi Brown Natural Brow Shaper & Hair Touch-Up
Bobbi Brown's take on brow gel is this brilliantly creamy shaping formula. It contains vitamin B5 and wheat protein to create a natural-looking definition with a perfect touch of color. Not only that, but your eyebrows will stay in place all day without appearing stiff.
Best Volumizing: UOMA Beauty Brow-Fro Blow Out Gel
Natural-looking arches are all about volume. With this in mind, UOMA Beauty created Brow-Fro, the ultimate filler, and volumizer. A few upward strokes are all you need to achieve full, shapely, uniform eyebrows with a flattering hint of color.
Best Long-Wear: L'Oréal Paris Unbelieva-Brow Longwear Brow Gel
Need something that'll last all day and into the night? Look no further than Unbelieva-Brow, a standout eyebrow filler and thickener that stays strong for a whopping 48 hours. Thanks to spherical silica and long-wear polymers, the waterproof formula delivers beautifully natural color while resisting sweat, smudges, and transfers.
Best Shade Range: Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel
We're also big fans of Benefit's award-winning Gimme Brow. The non-messy, water-resistant formula provides a look of fullness while depositing a gorgeous tint. It comes in 10 stunning shades, ranging from black-brown to light blonde.
"I'm currently into Benefit Gimme Brow Gel #5, which has a tiny brush and ashy color," says Cherbonnier. "I try to avoid warm or red-toned gels [with my clients] unless the brow hair has natural red undertones."
Best Clear: NYX Professional Makeup Control Freak Eyebrow Gel
For an all-around great clear gel, pick up a tube of Control Freak. You can apply the non-sticky vegan formula on naked hairs, over powders, or on top of a tinted brow gel.
"If applying clear brow gel, I recommend pressing the brow hairs into the skin in an upward motion, especially the longer hairs in the inner corner of the brow," says Cherbonnier. "This technique helps set the brow and wipes off access gel."
Best Vegan: Milk Makeup KUSH Fiber Brow Gel
Kush Fiber Brow doesn't isn't made with any animal ingredients, but it does contain hemp-derived cannabis oil. This standout ingredient conditions your eyebrow hairs while fusing them with tiny fibers to add volume and all-day fullness. We also like that the little tapered brush has firm bristles, as it helps the gel go on evenly.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel is hands down the best brow gel out there today. The handy tube is filled with a perfectly creamy gel that fills in, defines, and volumizes your eyebrows without any flakes. That said, e.l.f. Cosmetics Wow Brow Gel will only run you a few dollars, and the waxy gel formula delivers an impressively voluminous, natural-looking effect.
What to Look For in a Brow Gel
When it comes to brow gels, the formula is key. You'll want to look for an option with a somewhat creamy consistency, as this will help it go on smoothly. Many options are also infused with little fibers, which help the gel stick to your existing hairs to make your brows look more voluminous.
Other than that, long-wear brow gels typically contain ingredients that make them water-resistant (if not waterproof) so they stand up to smudges and smears. We recommend waxy formulas for long-wear to avoid the stiffness and flaking you get with some glue-like options.
Another thing to consider is the brush. Most brow gels come in little tubes with spoolie-style brushes attached to the caps. While they can look pretty similar, not all brushes are created equal.
"The smaller the brush, the easier the application. A small brush lets you really get into each brow hair and avoid getting product on the skin around the brows," Cherbonnier explains.
Aside from size, pay attention to the shape and stiffness of the brush. Tapered options make it easier to apply the gel at the right angle, and stiffer spoolies help the product go on smoother.
With all eyebrow products, the general rule of thumb for people with darker manes is to select a color that's a shade or two lighter than your hair. This will help you achieve the most natural-looking brows. However, folks with blonde and platinum hair can usually go darker, either with a medium hue or a darker shade for a more striking look.
