So… I have a bit of an eyebrow obsession. Ever since we left the era of skinny, arched brows behind and ushered in the era of thick, straight ones, for the first time in my life, I felt like I was naturally #blessed with what just so happened to be trendy—and I was determined to make the most of it while it lasts.
Accordingly, over the past few years, I’ve tried every tinted brow gel I could get my hands on in order to make my already caterpillar-y brows as thick and feathered as possible. Yes, I'm also into pencils and powders; but for my particular brow shape and texture, tinted gels are my brow product of choice.
When I'm evaluating the quality of a tinted brow gel, I look for a few things: Does it provide long-lasting hold? Does the formula adhere to my brow hairs without getting all over my face? Does it look natural? Is there a decent range of shades? The best brow gels meet three or four of these requirements.
I've tried 50+ brow gels over the years, but the following eight are the only ones I've continued to reach for. Keep scrolling to discover the best brow gels, according to one of Byrdie's most brow-obsessed editors.
Glossier's Boy Brow definitely helped put the thick-brow trend back on the map—maybe it's overplayed, and I do wish the tube was filled with more product, but I'm genuinely into how the formula thickens and fills in my brows without making them feel crunchy. It also doesn't hurt that the brown shade matches my brow color perfectly.
Cannabis oil is apparently good for brow growth, which is why Milk infused its new gel with it. This stuff definitely offers a subtler effect than Glossier's, but I'm still really into the flake-free formula, which works well to make my brows look bushy and soft. I also like how tiny the applicator brush is (similar to Glossier's).
I don't want to play favorites, but this brow gel is my favorite of the bunch. I've talked about it approximately 34,000 times on Byrdie since discovering it over the summer, but that's only because literally no other brow gel makes my arches look as feathered and full or keeps them in place as well. Just buy it.
If you're looking for a slightly wetter, glossier brow look, this under-the-radar find is great. The super-lightweight formula doesn't offer as much hold as the others, but what it lacks there, it makes up for in how shiny and healthy it makes your brow hairs look.
My favorite drugstore brow gel is this little guy, which offers results very similar to ModelCo's for less than half the price. The tiny precision applicator, thickening formula, and all-day hold are among the product's praise-worthy assets.
Benefit recently reformulated its iconic Gimme Brow due to some drama with the old one (google it if you're interested), but it's still great. IMHO, the best things about it are the volumizing microfibers in the formula and the impressive shade range—there are eight different options, which is practically unheard of with brow gel.
The super-skinny applicator on this thing guarantees that you don't make a mess of your gel application. The vitamin E–infused formula makes your brows look just thick enough and insanely shiny and healthy.
If sparse brows are your issue, give Sephora's unique brow gel a go. The product has a mousse-like texture that fills in gaps naturally and a cool flocked applicator that really suits the formula. As our senior editor Hallie says, the product helps build a full brow from scratch: "The formula is waterproof, stain-like, and adheres to both skin and hair (so even the sparsest brows can be built up)."
