Apple cider vinegar—or ACV, as the cool kids call it—has been hailed for its ability to lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides, fight off bacteria and viruses that can cause infection, reduce inflammation, improve gut health, and help with weight loss. With all of those benefits, who wouldn’t want to take it?

If you’ve ever tried to down a shot of ACV, though, you already know that it can taste pretty gross. Some apple cider vinegar proponents say you can make it more palatable by mixing it with water and a little honey, and while that certainly improves things, it still wouldn’t be our drink of choice.

Thankfully, several supplement manufacturers stepped up to help us find a way to get the benefits of ACV without the cringeworthy taste: apple cider vinegar gummies. These gummies are packed with acetic acid—the active ingredient in apple cider vinegar—but they’re also delicious enough to bring us back to the days of trying to sneak another Flintstone vitamin from the cabinet.

Ahead, registered dietitian Andrea Grange tells us what to look for when shopping for an apple cider vinegar gummy.

What to Look For in Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies

A High Concentration of ACV

Grange says that gummies can sometimes have fewer nutrients than supplements in pill form to improve their taste. With that in mind, she says to thoroughly read a product’s label to make sure it contains a high enough level of ACV in order for you to reap all of the benefits. How many milligrams does this entail? “Because there isn’t much research on ACV, there are no official recommendations, but I would say look for products that contain at least 200mg,” she says.

No Added Sugars

While we all want our gummies to be delicious, Grange recommends ACV supplements that don’t contain any added sugars. “Sometimes vitamin companies will add in extra sugar to make a supplement taste better,” she says. “While it’s nice to have a good-tasting supplement, the added sugar isn’t worth it.” Have a sweet tooth? Look for products that have very low amounts of added sugars or use sugar alternatives that won’t have much of an effect on your blood sugar, like erythritol.

Dietary supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA, so Grange recommends gummy supplements that have been tested by a third-party company. A good place to start? Look for products that are GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)-certified to ensure they're produced with safe practices and standards.
