As beauty editors, we’re constantly testing out products, so it’s nearly impossible to play favorites. But if we had to choose the most versatile product in our makeup bags, it's lipstick all the way. Hear us out: No other product gives you as many different finishes, and one swipe is all that’s needed to transform your entire look. And with fall’s arrival, there’s no better time to experiment. So we're retiring our pinky-nude shades and opting for something more sultry—deep berry. Now, we know berry lips aren’t revolutionary (they make a comeback every fall), but this season’s take is different. “I’d describe it as lush and diffused,” says Los Angeles–based makeup artist Jadene Munson. “It’s a bold statement with a hint of gloss and soft edges.” We’re going to just say it: This might be the most wearable berry lip trend to date.
Curious about how it’s done? Munson walks us through each step and the products to use to get the look, all of which are available at Nordstrom.
Before you even reach for your lip color, make sure your lips are properly exfoliated. Then, apply liquid lipstick to your bottom lip only. Squeeze your lips together to transfer the color from your bottom lip to the top. This technique especially helps when using a liquid lipstick, as the formula tends to dry quickly. Starting with a lighter layer, and building up from there allows you to get the look you want. Next, use the pointed tip of the wand to line the rest of your upper lip and to fill in any spots you might have missed.
This lip isn’t meant to be precise or perfect, but rather a little undone. Munson recommends using a blending brush with a dab of concealer to buff along the edges of your lips to create a diffused, smudge-like appearance.
For the final step, squeeze a pea-sized drop of clear lip gloss onto your finger, and pat it onto the center of your lips. You don’t want the finished look to be too glossy, so this technique will give you a more balm-like texture.
Since you want the focus of your look to be on your lips, you don't need much else. "Flawless skin, a contoured face, and a full set of brows is all that’s needed to balance the look out,” says Munson.
