The modeling and beauty industries love a good sister act, and right now, Bella and Gigi Hadid are running the show. (Or perhaps we should say runway.) That being said, objectively, the sisters' ascent to fame has been fast and furious. And not surprisingly, the inevitable judgment, criticism, and glaring spotlight of fame and fascination has quickly followed suit. (Both sisters have had such personal topics as their weight, relationships, and health publicly discussed and dissected in recent years.)
In a new interview with Harper's Bazaar, the sisters sat down (together!) for a quick tête-á-tête in regard to family, fame, and those aforementioned misconceptions related to the latter. The twist: Gigi (the elder of the two sisters at 23) filled the spot as interviewer and Bella, 21, the interviewee. And not surprisingly, their conversation was rife with golden nuggets of wisdom—reminding us not only of the sisters' normalcy and candor (they are human, after all) but also of their wise-beyond-their-years perspective.
For example, they prioritize relaxation and quality time spent with their family before partying and club-hopping.
"People think I'm such a party girl, but that's a thing of the past," Bella shared after Gigi pointed out how much of homebody she is. "I can't wait to just sit on the couch this weekend! Now that our careers have gotten to the heights that they have and our job is to be around people all day and go to parties, the last thing I want to do on a Saturday night is go out. I just want to be around people who love me. Like you and I play video games, watch movies, paint pottery—all the stupid shit we used to do back in our childhood before we became Gigi and Bella."
Another thing keeping the model centered: beauty sleep and some well-timed (and strategic) disconnection from social media. "Before bed, I love listening to meditation music. It helps me zone out and fall asleep. And in the morning I make it a point to keep my phone away from me for 30 minutes so my brain can start functioning before I get completely overwhelmed by the media. Sometimes I just want to be me for 30 minutes, not 'Bella.'"
Curious to know the exact meditation music Bella listens to as she drifts off? We did some digging (you're welcome) and discovered via Teen Vogue that the model prefers this 50-song playlist found on iTunes. And if you're new to the mediation game and need some backup (or just an excuse to spoil yourself a bit pre-shut-eye), here are six more sleep aids Byrdie editors swear by.
To listen to said meditation music in bed (or while traveling!), we recommend these wireless earbuds from Apple.
If a playlist isn't your thing, this sound machine from Sharper Image gives you plenty of relaxing alternatives to choose from. We're partial to the campfire and rain settings.
Practically every single Byrdie editor has one of these luxe silk-spun sleep masks atop her bedside table. Not only does it feel warm and fuzzy, but it also helps block out any unwanted light for a better night's rest.
Even though my roommate (hey, Amanda Montell!) and I own the entirety of the Moon Juice apothecary (we're obsessed), this sleep-enhancing dust has to be my favorite. I've been on a smoothie-for-dinner kind of kick recently (I blame this both on my inherent laziness when it comes to cooking and how barren the fridge currently is) and have started putting a half teaspoon of Dream Dust into my nightly concoction. Not only do I fall asleep faster, but I also wake up feeling more relaxed and less immediately anxious.
Infused with relaxing notes like frankincense, sandalwood, vetiver, cypress, bergamot, orange, and ylang-ylang, this balm, when applied to the wrists and temples pre-bedtime, is the perfect complement to meditation music.
These gummies from Olly, which taste like blackberry-flavored Swedish Fish, are formulated with melatonin, L-theanine, and botanicals to help you fall asleep faster.
