It Hails From Down Under
Becca came to being 15 years ago, in 2001, when its founder, Rebecca Morrice Williams, was in pursuit of the perfect foundation. Unable to find one that suited her desires for something natural and weightless, she took matters into her own hands. And so was born the cult Australian beauty brand that has since grown into a global business with a cult following. Natural, effortless beauty continues to be a driver of the brand, and its Australian roots are to thank for its bohemian, beachy feel.
Foundation Is the Foundation
As the impetus for how the brand came to be, foundation was literally the foundation of Becca. Since its beginnings, Becca's mission has been "to find complexion products and formulas that fit every woman out there," says Cole. Unlike most other beauty brands, Becca has consistently offered a 50/50 split in its foundation range—50% of the shades fall under light to medium, and the other 50% fall under medium to dark. Initially, the brand offered upward of 20 shade options. It's since streamlined its lineup but continues to cover that same wide range of shades, very much in contrast with competitors who opt for a more limited, one-size-fits-all approach.
Product Development Is Influenced by Users
Becca engages with its fans in a unique way. Cole notes that it's always about having a two-way conversation, departing from the one-sided approach that's so prevalent in the industry. Instead of broadcasting to fans, Becca creates an open dialogue via social media channels. "Becca beauties are very vocal," admits Cole, and the brand is all ears when it comes to feedback. She even admits that a lot of the brand's new product development comes through what Becca Beauties are saying. Cole and her colleagues go out into the field to listen to consumers and clients and bring that information back to the product development team.
There's a Video Series
Earlier this year, Becca launched a video series called Vanity Side Chats. Cole sits down with various beauty influencers—like Jaclyn Hill—to chat about all things beauty. The approach is very candid, taking a break from brand-driven content and being inclusive of beauty as a whole. As Cole describes, "It puts the influencer in a really human setting, and we get to hear what their favorite products are when it's not being pushed by a certain brand."
It's the #1-Selling Highlighting Brand
Cole notes that many are surprised to find out that Becca is the number one–selling highlighting brand. Since its start, Becca has prided itself on being the expert in light in beauty, helping women highlight the features they love—literally and figuratively.
Its Hero Product Comes in Multiple Formulas
The Shimmering Skin Perfector first debuted as a liquid formula before Becca came out with the pressed version. Last year, the brand introduced Shimmering Skin Perfector Poured Crème, a smooth cream formula. This skin-perfecting trifecta comprises Becca's top performers, and each gives off a different look. "The original liquid formula is known for a dewy radiant look, the powder gives you that high shine, and the crème gives a mattifying luminosity," says Cole.
Its Products Are Multifunctional
One of the biggest secrets about Becca beauty is just how many ways you can use it. If you take a scroll through Cole's Instagram feed, you're treated to a lineup of quick and easy tutorials utilizing Becca products in innovative ways. Cole dished on some of her favorite ways to multipurpose Becca staples, like sweeping one of the brand's mineral blushes over the top of a lip gloss to completely transform its color, or even tapping Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector over a clear gloss to make it matte. Because of the brand's mineral-based formulas and use of very fine pure pigments, the options for play are endless, and with a little creativity, you're able to be your own stylist.
The Future Holds a Lot of Light
While Cole wasn't able to reveal too much about what's in store for Becca fans in the coming months, she did hint that we can expect a lot of light. She teased that there are a ton of products they've been working diligently on that will be "bringing light into our Becca family." As we're already loving everything from the brand's offerings that plays to that theme of light—from the Backlight Priming Filter to the Blushed With Light Palette—we can't wait to discover what's next up as Becca builds out that category.
