Because They're Never Not Wearing Makeup

Drawing the perfect cat eye takes practice and finding the best bright lipstick for your skin tone takes time, but the trickiest task of them all is perfecting no-makeup makeup. Nothing looks as healthy as gleaming, freshly scrubbed skin--except that freshly scrubbed skin often reveals even the tiniest flaws. So is there, we wondered, a way to hide blemishes and even out skin tone while still looking au naturel? Taking our cues from celebrities like Sienna Miller, Jessica Hart, and Jessica Chastain, we asked celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles to teach us her secrets. Products with the word ‘radiant’ in their name might sound like the easiest bet--but be careful. “If your skin’s on the oily side, this kind of glow quickly becomes a bit out of control and just looks very shiny,” Stiles says. If your skin is drier, Nars recently released their Radiant Creamy Concealer ($28) to go with their well-loved Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer ($42), both of which make you look lit from within. We’re big fans of Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer ($17), too.

If you follow one rule, Stiles says, “Stick to creams and liquids. They allow your skin to show through the products.” She’s talking about everything on your skin, from the base--like Chantecaille’s Just Skin ($64) or Laura Mercier’s Radiance Foundation Primer ($44)--to your blush, like Benefit’s Benetint ($30). Use your fingers to apply everything--they lend a softer touch than brushes and sponges--and polish everything off with a highlighter. “Nothing too sparkly!” Stiles cautions. Dab Tom Ford’s Illuminating Highlight Pen ($54) on your cheekbones, along the bridge of your nose, in your Cupid’s bow, and in the inside corners of your eyes. It’s so subtle you’ll barely see it, but the sun will pick it up and give you a radiant--not shimmering--complexion.

“Even if you want a no-makeup look, things still have to be enhanced,” Stiles emphasizes. Try using an eye shadow one shade darker than your lid’s natural color and a clear brow gel like Make Up For Ever’s Brow Seal Transparent Eyebrow Gel ($18). Don’t forget to define your lashes, too; “you can use brown mascara if you like, but I always prefer jet black,” she says. “It's just sexier.” Top it off with a tinted lip balm; Fresh ($23) makes a wide range of sheer colors.
