The £5 Highlighter That's Selling Out Everywhere

Updated 01/28/18

I've been fairly dismissive of the word "strobing." I mean, it's essentially a rebrand for what will always be highlighting. But regardless of what you call it, I'm a big fan, as a hint of shimmer can make even the dullest complexion glow. Whether it's because you had one too many wines last night or you want to enhance a tan, a slick of champagne shimmer is just what you need for a quick facial pick-me-up.

Every week there seems to be a new highlighting crayon or palette launching, and while I'm spoiled by being able to try some of the most expensive products on the market, there's a £5 highlighter that is so popular it sold out on ASOS over the summer. Enter Barry M's new Illuminating Strobe Cream.

They arrived at my desk a few months ago, and at the time I didn't give them much thought. But when I was in a rush one evening and needed to perk up my tired face before an event, I couldn't believe how much of a good job they did. They faked eight hours of sleep and gave me that I've-been-to-a-yoga-class glow that my skin was craving.

Barry M Illuminating Strobing Cream in Frosty Pink $5

The stocky tube (which fits remarkably well in a little handbag) has a small domed highlighter stick inside, making it very handy to apply. The more domed the stick, the more control you have over how much highlighter you apply and where. So points for control.

Next up is the colour. You can choose from either a frosty pink or an iced bronze—I opted for the former. This complemented my skin tone particularly well, as I have no tan at the moment (fake or real), so it just highlighted my natural colouring. And the best bit is that it wasn't glittery, meaning I didn't look like one of those grown-up fans of My Little Pony.

These two factors combined made the product an absolute dream, giving me control over how much I wanted, which also meant I could build up the colour if needed, plus a gorgeous hue. Thankfully there are still some left in the shops and online, but if they run out, don't say we didn't warn you. You can also shop our pick of the best highlighters below…
