Autumn is here, which means we're headed into a changeable period where one day it feels like summer and the next like Armageddon. The secret to ensuring your makeup looks just as good on those darks days, as it does on the sunny ones is to make six small updates to your makeup bag. Do this and your makeup will be able to handle anything the weatherman has to throw at it. Plus, it's also a good excuse to treat yourself to some shiny new makeup that you really do need, honest.

Keep scrolling for the makeup bag updates worth making.

1. Update to a Hydrating Foundation

As we transition from summer to autumn, you may want to opt for a slightly heavier foundation, but don’t go too heavy just yet. All being well, your skin will be pretty healthy-looking right now with that summer glow still intact. Opt for a hydrating foundation like Max Factor Healthy Skin Harmony Foundation (£14) or Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation & Brush (£35), both of which offer a little added coverage and much-needed hydration to contend with the drop in temperature and the central heating.

2. Add a Face Mist

Yep, central heating. It won’t be long before we crank it up, so make sure you have a face mist to hand on your desk. While it won’t offer deep-down hydration, it will prevent your skin from feeling tight and dry, and ensure your makeup looks fresh all day.

3. Wear Blusher

These days, blusher tends to get overlooked for contour and highlighter, but if you’re anything like me, as soon as autumn arrives, my complexion starts to look sallow, and no amount of sculpting can fix it. A pop of creamy blush on the apples of your cheeks will perk up your face fast.

4) Use a Skin-Boosting Primer

With the weather becoming increasingly changeable during autumn—warm one minute, raining the next—you need a primer that will support your makeup. Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer SPF30 (£42), contains pearl powder to brighten, peptides to firm, and SPF to prevent against free radical damage. You may not think you need SPF in the autumn, but the sun is lower in the sky at this time of year, so it can still cause damage. The rule? If it’s light enough to see in front of you, then you need to be wearing SPF to prevent against the sun’s ageing effects.

5. Switch to a Highlighting Powder

Come autumn and winter, your skin may lose some of that coveted glow. To fake it, invest in an illuminating powder. You can use it just like a translucent powder to temper shine and lock in makeup.

6. Add a Tinted Lip Balm

Dry lips are a curse that autumn brings for many. If this is you, pre-empt it by bagging yourself a tinted balm like Kiehl’s Butterstick Lip Treatment SPF25 (£20), which adds a hint of colour and contains nourishing coconut oil and antioxidant lemon butter oil to protect lips and prevent them from chapping.
