Leave it Rihanna to have the realest conversation that ever was about men’s skincare. The Fenty Skin queen chatted with her friend and Fenty skin campaign muse, A$AP Rocky for GQ on the not-so-talked-about subject of men’s skincare. It’s no secret there’s a lack of knowledge around best skin practices when it comes to males versus their female counterparts, but it’s the beauty industry’s fault for not addressing that gap on a wide scale like Rihanna is doing now.
Case in point, when Rihanna asks A$AP what his skin type is, he answers, “handsome.” Although he replies jokingly, it isn’t until Rihanna breaks down different skin types—dry, oily, sensitive—that he confidently replies, “very sensitive.”
The two friends talk candidly on a variety of topics like best and worst fashion moments for the video, but RiRi makes sure to grill the rapper some more on skin. She fishes for A$AP’s “skin idol,” but his response is not surprising at all.
“Personally, no man. No men, really. Unfortunately, growing up I didn't even know that [skincare]. I mean I know now. We find out as we get older, like girls love men with manicures and pedicures and stuff like that. Skincare is a big thing when it comes to women,” he tells it like it is.
Rihanna, very honestly, schools him on what women really like. “I mean come on, as much as you guys think about your, your nails and your skin, we think about that too. We look at that. We enjoy men that take care of their skin and nails, because it says a lot about like how they'll take care of themselves and the people around them. So of course, it's a big deal for us,” she tells him.
Don’t get it twisted though. A$AP Rocky does have a self-care routine, and although it’s pretty basic—showering, skincare, exfoliating, moisturizing, grooming— we’re loving everything basic in quarantine. The 29 year-old says at age 14 or 15 is when he first became aware of skincare, and credits a ‘90s favorite as his “first”—Noxzema. “It was cool,” he said of the cleanser.
In 2020 however, A$AP is a changed man and is a fanboy for Rihanna’s Fenty Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer with SPF 30. Can you say, “growth”?
In return, A$AP Rocky grilled Rihanna on her skincare routine for Vogue, which includes—you guessed it—Fenty Skin.
