Whether it's applying my favorite face mask or taking extra care of my hair with a scalp serum, I'm all about pampering myself with some luxuriously time-consuming self-care. However, same as anybody else, there are times when I just want products that will provide quick results and are simple to apply. For example: Washing my thick hair can be a hassle and blow-drying takes ages. So on those lazy days, I need a dry shampoo to give my hair a quick refresh.
You've probably seen Amika's bright, fun packaging on your social media feeds. I know I have, and I've wanted to try out some of the brand's products for some time now. Naturally, the popular Perk Up Dry Shampoo seemed like the perfect addition to my lazy day routine. Read on to find out how the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo worked for me.
Best for: All hair types
Uses: Absorbs oil, reduces odor, and gives hair a freshly washed look
Byrdie Clean?: No, contains benzyl benzoate

About the brand: Amika is a Brooklyn-based creative collective comprised of hair stylists, chemists, and product enthusiasts. The brand's 11 collections cater to a wide range of hair types, textures, and styles.
About My Hair: Thick and color-treated
Having thick, wavy hair means I use products that hydrate, such as a hair conditioning mask to prevent frizz. And since my hair is balayage, I have to make sure the products I use are safe for color-treated hair, too. Many dry shampoos can leave it feeling dry, so I tend to stay away from them. Of course, there are moments when I don't have the time to wash my hair and seek out products that can freshen it up without drying it out or making it look flat.
The Formula: Lightweight and invisible
When I first received the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo, I was in awe of the colorful packaging. I sprayed the product on my hand and found it lightweight as if I had not applied anything.
The instructions for the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo state to shake the bottle well, angle it 8 inches away, spray it onto roots in a sweeping motion, wait 30 seconds, and then massage and brush the product through. I followed these instructions to the "T." When I was ready to use it, I shook the bottle, angled it above my head, and started gently spraying—I immediately noticed no white residue. After 30 seconds, I began massaging the product. My hands glided through my hair, and they did not feel sticky at all.
The scent of this product is slightly clean and sweet, which I enjoyed. I love that it gave me a hint of volume and left no white residue. As someone with color-treated hair, I've used dry shampoos that bland my color after use, but this one kept a nice shine to my hair.
The Results: Effortless, refreshed hair
The first time I used Perk Up, I instantly noticed that my hair felt clean and did not turn stiff, which I loved because I have had that issue with other dry shampoos. It helped to absorb the oils in my hair without affecting its shine. At the end of the day, my hair still felt refreshed and non-greasy. Over time, I noticed that I could go longer without washing if I wished. I used this product after working out, on day three of not washing my hair, and on those days when I just felt lazy. Overall, I was stunned by how great this dry shampoo made my hair look and feel.
The Value: A worthwhile investment
The Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo retails at $26 for 5.3 oz. I know that is a pretty penny, but the amount of product you receive and the high-end quality of the brand make it worth all the coins. As someone with thick hair, I use a good amount of spray to spread it evenly, and this one does the job: I've used it for almost a month, and I still have a lot of product left. I've tried many others, and they either leave a white residue, have a weird aerosol spray scent, or leave my hair feeling stiff, but the Amika Dry Shampoo is the opposite. If you aren't keen on spending $26, get the 1.8 oz size for $14. You need to try this one.
Similar Products: You have options
Eva NYC Freshen Up Invisible Dry Shampoo: The Eva NYC Freshen Up Dry Shampoo ($13) has an invisible formula that helps to revive lifeless hair by absorbing excess oil and odor, leaving it clean and bouncy. It is safe to use on keratin-, Brazilian-, and color-treated hair, and you get 5.3 oz worth of product. The downside is that it has a strong scent, which could be bothersome to some.
Ouai Super Dry Shampoo: The OUAI Super Dry Shampoo ($26) retails at the same price as the Amika Dry Shampoo and features similar benefits (such as leaving no residue) but adds more volume to the hair. The downside is that you only receive 4.5 oz of product compared to Amika's 5.3 oz.
The Amika Dry Shampoo leaves hair smelling wonderful without any grit or residue. It will help your hair feel cleaner in between washes and works great with all hair types. I consider it a must-have.
