Welcome to Byrdie's Wellness Week. Over the next seven days, you'll get to read about how to make your body, mind and, well, your life more balanced. We know it's not January but wellness has become an all-year-round focus for many, and with autumn on the way (read: cold and flu season), now seems like a good time to talk about not just keeping well but boosting our wellness from all angles. From the best tech to improve your health to the small tweaks anyone can do to bring you more happiness, we've thought about everything you might want to factor a little more wellness into your life with ease. Today, Alice Liveing wants to help you enter the new season feeling healthy and full of vitality. Sounds good, right?
Well, I don’t know how it happened, but the summer seems to have flown by in a crazy (and slightly chilly) blur! For some, September is tinged with the sadness of summer being over, but for others, it’s a time to embrace all things new. It’s often at this time that we realize the end of year is in sight and the countdown is on to when you’ll start reflecting on the accomplishments you've made over the last 12 months.
Thankfully, there are still a few months left to make a change—be it a new job, new hobby or new adventure. The thing is, while change is incredibly exciting, it can be unsettling for some. With that in mind, I’ve brought you some of my favorite tips and tricks to help you transition from one season to the next with ease.
1. Read Something Inspirational
I recently read 10% Happier by Dan Harris and found it a really insightful read. Like me, Dan didn’t take to meditation easily and often saw himself as someone who just didn’t have time or couldn’t commit to the practice of meditating, but through his own personal (and very public) breakdown, he had to implement strategies to manage his stress. The book is great for anyone who feels that their anxiety can sometimes get the better of them (i.e., most people), and I highly recommend giving it a read.
2. Eat Seasonally
September is an awesome month for amazing seasonal fruits and vegetables that can hopefully help inspire you to incorporate more of these great foods into your diet, from delicious roasted aubergine to sweet figs, plums, pumpkin and more. Think outside the box, and try to experiment with some of these awesome ingredients.
3. Try Clean Sleeping
I’m not the greatest of sleepers, and I often find myself waking up in the middle of the night with work on my mind. A friend suggested I try an app called Calm, and since discovering it, it has completely changed my ability to fall back to sleep. It’s loaded with guided meditation, sleep stories and calming sounds to help you drift back off into a deep slumber. Sleep is so important to our overall recovery and mood, so finding something that helps improve your quality of sleep is always a bonus.
4. Start Meat-Free Mondays
I’ve recently been inspired to try and reduce my animal produce intake for environmental reasons, and I have therefore been way more creative with my veggie meal ideas. I think it’s a really great challenge to try and encourage yourself to experiment when it comes to your dinner ideas—even incorporating something like a meat-free day each week can make a difference. Try using ingredients like lentils, chickpeas, wild rice and loads of veggies to mix up your food choices and do your bit for the planet too!
5. Hold Onto Your Summer Glow
Doesn’t everyone love their summer tan and rocking that post-holiday glow? Well, I’ve recently discovered Tan Luxe, the best fake tan I’ve ever used which re-creates that gorgeous glow straight from a bottle. I’ve been using the Gradual llluminating Gradual Tan Moisturizer, which has an amazing smell and slight shimmer that makes you look as though you’ve just stepped off the plane. For those September days when you’re needing a little pick-me-up, this should be your go-to product.
